0x80070570 Error Code on install - One Easy Solution

New shiny windows 7 disk arrives. ...... doesn't want to install ...

keep getting error message 0x80070570 when Windows 7 is expanding files:

Windows cannot install required files error 0x80070570
The file may be corrupt or missing.. Make sure all files required for installation are available and restart installation.

Spend an hour googling .. people suggest RAM problems .. I know my RAM is good but spend an hour or two running MEMTEST ...

Then I see a lot of people reduced to trying to install from a USB key .... great .... borrow my neighbours 4GB Cruzer, follow instructions, ... and bork it in the process of not installing the OS.

So eventually I call Microsoft and speak to a very nice lady in India who runs me through a dozen or so workarounds for this .. I'm pressing control +F keys left, right and centre, taking out RAM sticks, disabling EVERYTHING in BIOS.

Always the same thing:

Windows cannot install required files error 0x80070570
The file may be corrupt or missing.. Make sure all files required for installation are available and restart installation.

So after maybe two hours on the phone with her she decided to report the issue to the second line team. I'm told they will call me back today as they don't work weekends (all this took place Friday up til now).

EASY SOLUTION:

I don't wait weekends for answers (nor do I usually need to call tech support). One thing we had noticed is that the repair console refused to lauch because it said there was an install in progress. But the support didn't pick up on this and it wasn't until Saturday morning I tried what turned out to be the easiest solution ever.

When you see the error "0x80070570 can't access files" on install click --> Cancel ---> you will be returned to the "Install Now" startup screen and - WITHOUT REBOOTING - just re-start the install.

Second time round it went smooth as clockwork and installed fine.

I have not tried to reproduce this error as I just want a working system

Be interested to know if this easy solution works for anyone else. I informed Microsoft of it when their engineer called today and they are going to look into it. They are aware of the install issue but never heard of this fix before.

Completely unnecessary hardware removal at that ... they had me take out everything and THAT still didn't fix it ... I put it all back in again and this did

That was the first thing I did was to try again without reboot.

I am tempted to return the DVD to the shop I got it and ask for another one. When I got the Win 7 DVD I noticed a manufacturing scratch on the surface.

I get to 13% when I get the error. Now I am trying to remove the RAM and all. If this does keep up I will see if I can exchange for another disc.

There are a lot of complex factors at work in installing Windows 7. The weather seems to play an important part - and other random phenomena.

I reckon that scratch isn't helping much though ....

I pulled 2 or the 4 DDR2 chips. Worked!

Reinserted them post-install.

I'm still having little problems like no internet connectivity when the win firewall is in place... etc.

Just needs a little tweeking.

Found a few possible fix ideas...

Skip to the end of my post for a brief summary!

I bought the student version of the Windows 7 upgrade. I bought it with the intention to install in on a new hard drive in my laptop. I soon realised that the upgrade version required an old version of Windows to be beneath it in order to perform the install.

I dug up an old XP disk and used that. I then started the custom install of Windows 7 by booting with a DVD I made from the downloadable Windows 7 ISO file.

I formatted my drives and created the partitions as I wanted them (I have a feeling this may have been the thing that caused all of the problems). The format seemed to take less than 5 seconds which didn't seem quite right but who knows.

Next I went to install Windows 7 and got the same error that everyone has talked about here. I got it around 30% of the expanding section. I repeated this a few times without rebooting and never got any further.

I then used Memtest86+ to check my RAM. This took around 2 hours: no errors found.

I downloaded a new copy of the Windows 7 ISO and burnt a new copy of the ISO onto DVD using Nero (My previous DVD was made using NTI).

I performed a fresh installation of Windows XP with only one partition. I used the new boot disk and did not change any of the partition settings and did not format. I selected the partition with Windows XP on it and clicked OK when the "Windows Old" message came up.

This time the file extraction ran all the way through to 100% with no problems and I have got Windows 7 up and running.



To summarise, the possible factors causing my error could have been:

1) A faulty ISO downloaded from the Microsoft shop.

2) A faulty boot DVD (either due to the DVD itself, DVD writing software or the actual writing process).

3) Using the format and partition tools in the Windows 7 setup.

4) A bad installation of Windows XP.


I would advise the first port of call would be to make a new copy of the ISO boot DVD (try using the lowest write speed possible and make sure to make a DVD image or complete copy). This takes no time at all.

Second would be to try again without adjusting the format settings in the install process.

Third would be checking for RAM errors with a free download of Memtest which takes a while but could well be the problem.

I hope that helps someone, it took me 5 hours to get through the whole process.

Well, no matter, it just finished installing XP but it is taking for ever to get to the the log in screen. Why? I don't know... I will try the Memtest and see how that goes...

I need help on this though...
I just remembered another problem that i have when XP is installed... When I'm logged in and all, I check out the "Task Manager" and to my surprise it is using 28KB for the "System Idle Process" and it is at 99% steadily. So why does it take for ever to load things?

No that's not quite right. You can download a bootable iso, burn a disk and run memtest from that ... here is one of many sources:

I tried what was suggested in this thread and it doesn't work for me. Maybe it got further in "expanding" files. But I still got the 800705570 (files missing or corrupt) error.

Got this messge repeatedly while trying to do a clean install on my ThinkPad T-61. Reading this forum suggested a RAM problem, so I removed 1-2GB RAM chip from the machine, leaving 1-2GB chip installed. Win7 loaded flawlessly after that. Thank you folks so much!

I tried to install from SATA DVD drive, but got the missing driver message.
Reconnected IDE drive and waited for it to install.
Then got this "Cannot install required files" error.
I tried the 2 reboots and it did NOT work.
I removed 1 of the 4G memory chips, leaving 4G and that apparently did the trick!

I had this problem too all I needed to do was keep trying to install. It keeps loading a little more each time and finally works

This is a standard installation issue for which you remove all but 2gb RAM to try install.

If that's insufficient: Swap RAM, test RAM - Test with Memtest86+ testing sticks and slots, check slots for debris.

A fix for me - hopefully for some of you too

When I had the 0x80070570, I managed to get through the expanding windows files by changing the harddrive mode from AHCI to IDE. I don't know why this works, but you should try it. Needless to say, I was greatly relieved. Only now I'm stuck at the reboot problem. Lovely.

let me throw in some ashes to the problem:
when installing the 32-bit version on win7 home premium i get no errors. when trying to install the 64 bit verion, i get these percent errors.

anyway, with the easy install i was able to not so easy install windows 7.

although i should have mentioned that i did restart the computer. was just a matter of 'forcing' windows to install. tried without restarting and restarting. working now. cheers

Win 7 error code solved

Well solved for me at least. Someone suggested removing all RAM, except for one (I have 4) and try downloading Windows 7 again and it worked! Don't know why? It always got hung up at 17%, then I removed all 4 RAM, reinstalled 1 RAM in one slot (dual processor made to be a single) and it took instantly. I figure that the CPU (Pentium 4) has to deal with 4-RAM segments while downloading (via CD-ROM) a lot of data and just crashes. Anyways, thank you sevenforums.com you saved me from trashing my computer, because I was at wits end. I tried everything up to this point. Upgraded from XP on a clean HD (no OS on it).
