Hello,

Im currently running Windows XP Home Edition 32-Bit and I just downloaded Windows 7 Professional Upgrade 64-bit. I downloaded the ISO from Digital River which was part of the ultimate steal for students. Then I downloaded the Windows 7 DVD/USB Download Tool and made a bootable usb drive with the ISO on it. I booted from the USB drive and the first part went fine. I chose install now then custom install and then installed it on the drive partition containing XP. It got to about 54% on "unloading files" before it gave me an error 0x80070570. It said the media was corrupted or something and said to make sure all the installation files were there and then restart again. So I tried again, no cigar. I dont really know what to do now!

As im typing this im re-copying the ISO onto the USB Drive a 2nd time to see if it will work now.

Thanks for any help

Hi Solidsteel,

You are on the right track, by recopying across the installation media.
Here are some other avenues to look into should your fix not work. If it's possible, run check disk on both your Windows install drive and your usb drive. Also de-fragment both if you can. The error you mentioned is due to corrupt files; but at this early stage (without digging deeper) we don't know where the corruption is. i.e. It could be:
  • Your win 7 install files might be corrupt (this you are now looking into by recreating the installation media)
  • Your usb drive may have a corrupt partition (run chkdsk /R /X from an elevated command prompt to fix)
  • The usb drive could be failing
  • Your Operating system hard drive could have a corrupt partition (chkdsk /R /X), or could be failing
  • Either drive may be too fragmented for windows to access the files quick enough

Also, can you please confirm if you ran the windows 7 upgrade advisor prior to installing windows 7?

So i might need to download the ISO again if it is corrupt?? DAMN it took me 12 hours.

I didnt run the Windows 7 upgrade advisor. Its more than capable of running it if thats what you want to know.

I just finished copying the ISO to the USB drive. Im gonna try installing it again.

Thanks for your help

I feel for you, it happened to me when I downloaded the free student version of Windows server 2008 from https://www.dreamspark.com/default.aspx. The media is the same, so if you know someone else with a copy just borrow theirs and use your key.

Yeah but it's good to check, what if the hardware is fast and new enough but since it's release Microsoft has found a compatibility issue with it? Anyways - If the problem persists, unplug all external devices and take out all cards not needed as vital components (you can add these after install).

I just finished copying the ISO to the USB drive. Im gonna try installing it again.
*fingers crossed* Good luck mate!

OK so the 2nd time around i got the same error at around 53%. Ive read about it and some say it is a memory problem. I have 4Gb of G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3 1600MHz.

It could be a memory issue and there could be a corrupt page file. You can always try taking some sticks out.

Why don't you just do a fresh install? Because you have an upgrade disk, you'll need to install it with no key first. Then repair it and enter your windows key. This circumvents the upgrade only license.
