Hello, yesterday I bought Desktop Switch TL-SF1008D so I can connect my cable internet with 2 computers...Problem is when I connect all cables to Switch(modem+1st computer+2nd computer)only 1 computer have internet and other one after troubleshooting says "local area connection doesn't have a valid ip configuration",I made Homegroup Network and joined with other computer too,now under "See full map" I see my both computer--Switch--Gateway--Internet and when I check on other computer "See full map"(computer that don't have internet) I see just Both computers--Switch.

My question is how to set up to use same internet on 2 different computers in same time via switch.

That is true... or... or...

If you have two NIC cards in a dedicated computer, you can turn the computer into a Internet Sharing Box... Consequently, you have to keep the dedicated one on at all times for the 2nd computer to work.

It is advisable to buy a router.... If your not looking for something fancy then you can get one for a good deal off the net.

If you are in a rush then you can go to the store but warn you "will" pay store prices.

Another option is that ISP will lease out additional IP address to a residential address (at least time warner did) for an additional fee. You could use a switch like this.

I would suggest that since you only have two computers UP TO 4. That you take back the switch and get yourself a Router instead. Most routers have 4 ports that you can connect devices to and these ports act as a switch as well.

A switch or hub connected to one of the router ports if you have more computers than router ports ;)

The Way that I have my House....

I have DSL --- > Router ---> Outwards from LAN 1 Goes into First Switch.

Front Room 8 Port Switch:
1-Port: Goes to the Backroom Main Switch to Power that Switch
2-6: Powers the different Outlets I have in the front of my house.

Back Room 8 Port Switch:
1-Port: Taken from Front Switch
2-8: Powers the Back Rooms

Each Room has a Dedicated Cat 6 Cable going to a Jack in the Room.
Since It is easier to String One Cable instead of 20 Wires to One Room
I just Added a switch PER Room so that I can add multiple devices on the same LINE. Acts as a HUB per say.

That is the purpose of the switch.

Purpose of the Router:
1. It is under the Layer 3 of the OSI Model; therefore, it has a lot more capabilities than a typical switch, but does have switch capabilities as well.

2. You have one IP going into the WAN (Wide Area Network) port on the Router and then from there the router will use a function called "NAT" (network address translation) to give other devices on the home network internet capabilities.

For instance:
Internet IP: 22.56.123.56

Home Computers: 192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.3
All those computers on the private network address that are connected after the router will all have Internet and theoretically use the same Internet IP address (22.56.123.56) to go in and out of the internet.

The router knows which computer sent the file and knows where to deliver it. The router can do much more but that is the jist of it and that is why everyone is suggesting a router. Another thing that is good with a router is that you don't need one machine on to make another work. The router stays on constantly and any computer will still be on the internet.
