Hi all, happy to join the crew.

I have a simple question:
I've just upgraded my Vista HP to 7 PRO (which I like btw...it's snappy this baby;)) with the student offer ($30 dial).

I have a "mac-guy" friend who kindly gave up his chance to upgrade (he's simply not into MS).

So, what I planned to do is to use my DVD (PRO edition) to install 7 on another pc and use the new serial to activate it (this is legal, right? I'm not doing anything illegal, am I?).

Does the DVD contain the same source and can be used to install (as long as I insert a different serial to activate it) or there is some kind of impedimentent in doing so? (DVD-serial specific).
Again, they are both PRO edition.

If I can't do that I have to pass through the downloading/burning process again....so, that's why I'm asking.

Cheers,
m

Yes, you can do it. The media is the same anyways, only the key is different.

All of my systems still run fastest on XP 32-bit for the most part. Win7 is fun to play with, but I still prefer XP for raw speed, security, and functionality.
miche, welcome to the forums

hi wally,

it seems like a friend gave it to him.

yep....as I said, this friend doesn't care about MS stuff (he's into Mac) so I asked him to buy a copy for me...that's pretty much it (I'd like to point out that this is a friend of mine so he didn't earn a dime during the process..well, I bought him lunch today but I wouldn't really call it "making money out of it"...would you? :D)

That's why my concern about the legality of it. I mean, we are both students...does that really matter from a company's (MS) standing point? I will be running them on different machines anyway.

Cheers guys,
m

If you have a second legal key then there is no issue here. Just install the Pro and insert the key when prompted.

You may need a previous qualifying OS on there for it to take an Upgrade key, but if you have Vista or XP on there then you can even boot from the Installer to get a cleaner formatted install.

Tks. And the key is version unique, you need to install 7 Pro to use the Pro key

Tks. And the key is version unique, you need to install 7 Pro to use the Pro key

The installer is the same for all versions, but it takes deleting the ei.cfg file in Sources folder to show all versions, in case you want to bypass inserting key upfront and activate later.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe inserting the key will then select the version that is installed.

NO, you select the correct version then insert the KEY for it ....

Why are you constantly telling ppl to HACK-modify there DVD.

I wasn't aware about the ei.cfg hack...but no, at least from the upgrade DVD, it detects the version even if you activate it later. When I installed it last time, I didn't activate it and it went straight to Win PRO (don't quote me on this one though...maybe it was just my case).

Thank y'all

Cheers,

Your LEGAL version should only install exactly what you bought.
It works the same for everybody .

It is not advisable to HACK your DVD, and try to install any other version..
YOUR Professional KEY will only Activate Professional..

I wasn't aware that it provides a menu to select from before inserting key. When I went to look for how to access this menu back in the RC, I found this link here recommended by Brink: http://www.sevenforums.com/general-...l-versions-your-windows-7-build-7000-iso.html

If this isn't necessary now, then I am glad to know this.
