This is just to add on to the great help you are getting. I use the following hardware , see linky below, at work..."USB to IDE"...to hook up HDD's that I need to pull data from. No need to install HDD into another computer or an external enclosure. Works with IDE & SATA (supports 2.5 and 3.5 HDD's). Very cheap to purchase. "No muss, no fuss"

Why not just borrow the IDE cable from the Mom's machine?

Looks to me like the board has an IDE slot at the bottom of the board in the second picture.

Well no kidding. Easily overlooked fact. The IDE port is where I said it should be, hook it up there with the cable from the old PC

lol ok ok from the earlier post about the jumper if booting with out the jumper doesn't work then yes use the cs cable select putting it to slave will result into configuring it again


also these guys are very correct you have a old machine that just died why not use the parts it is there for the taking but be warned you WEI might get shifted if the hardware is too old

besides you are better off purchasing a cheap drive with more space and speed for indexing also i might add if you're mom really needs a pc asap you can help her build a effcient one for her for the price of 200.00 easy im sure she doesn't need much if her system is over 10 years old

Unless they plan on booting off a PATA hard drive that's 10 years old, I don't think it will be a problem
