100% ram usage please help

Hi I have built a pc which works really well, playing any game at full settings etc but after some time (and possibly only after resuming from sleep) the system will suddenly go to 100% ram usage and everything will grind to a halt.

the cpu will hover around 5-10% usage and this can happen with lots of webpages open or none.

I opened task manager and had a look at the processes and they dont seem to add up to the amount of ram being used.

I started resource monitor and here are some of thethings you can see,

the hard faults/sec is very high 100 nearly all the time, the following processes had 10-15 hardfaults /sec,

svchost (x2)
firefox
iexplorer(not open and process was greyed out but 2 instances)

if i restart my comp it will then be lightning fast and i can open loads of stuff close it and there wont be a problem, how can i find what is causing this?

forgot to mention my system its running windows 7 64bit has e8400 3ghz duo core, 2x2gig ram, hd4890 graphix, extra big fan on processor, sata hd etc etc

have you had a look in performance information and tools\advanced ?

have you had a look in performance information and tools\advanced ?

I'll do this now is there anything I should be looking for? (my performance rating is 5.9 i think limited by the hard drive)

Hi so I have had a look there and there are 716 messages warning/error/critical they all seem to be either standby performance or boot performance.

I have just resumed from sleep to write this message and noticed it generated a new error in the log. the thing is at the moment the system is behaving it self ram at about 30% and steady.

Is there a way to see what is using the ram when it does go crazy? as all the processes listed definately don't add up to 4 gigs

Open the Resource Monitor to the Memory tab, See which tasks have the biggest working set.....

Hi thanks, I will double check this once it goes wrong again. I did think i checked all tabs and there were none over a few hundred megs but maybe I just missed it. I did find a post from someone complaining about chrome causing a similar effect where it had cashed about 25gigs and that the page file (whatever this is) would max out the ram. I don't have chrome but how can i check that ie8 or firefox isnt doing this?

Well you need to do some reading about what a page file is and what it does...

However FireFox havs some know issues regarding memory. If FF is the culprit you can adjust its settings. Read more in this post... http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/11401-firefox-reducing-memory-usage.html
