Solved 102 error on reinstalling software program

I was having issues with Photoshop 7 and attempting to reinstall it gives the error: "Setup requires a different version of windows. Check to make sure that you are running Setup on the Windows platform for which it is intended. Error 102"

I find nothing relevant in the Adobe forums, and perceive this as a Windows error.

I have reinstalled this once or twice before with no issues. We are running Windows 7 Pro, 64 bit which has been working on this as well as on previous OSs. The machine is up-to-date without viruses and I have run SFC/scannow, and a registry cleaner; issue persists. System Restore is not an option.

The error may not be related to 'Adobe Photoshop'. It may occur after the installation of 'InstallSHIELD SDK Edition from Microsoft Visual C++ version 4.0'. Please refer to the following 'Microsoft article' and see if that works: PRB: InstallSHIELD Error: Setup requires a different version

This article is nearly 12 years old and applies to Microsoft Visual C++ 4.0 Standard Edition, which we don't have, and it might have worked if we had the disk with the mentioned file. But thanx for the post.

Have you tried running the installer in compatiblity mode with an older version of Windows?
Probably XP or maybe even 2000 or 98 might work.

I don't understand the significance of going back to XP, but no, haven't tried it.

Apologies for reference to an older article. What 'Alejandro85' asks seems to make sense. Not sure if 'Adobe Photoshop 7.0' is compatible with 'Windows 7'. While researching I came across a number of threads where users are facing difficulty installing 'Adobe Photoshop 7.0' on 'windows 7'. You may want to refer to the Adobe Photoshop version history - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

You may try installing the application in 'Windows 7' in compatibility mode to see if that helps. To run it in the compatibility mode, you may 'Right-click setup.exe' file > Click 'Properties' > Go to 'Compatibility' and select 'Windows XP'.

If you look at my original post, "I have reinstalled this once or twice before with no issues." This program has been operating on Windows 7 with no issues for well over a year. (The re-installs had nothing to do with PS.)

Compatibility mode does not resolve the issue (and I guess I should scan rather than skim, I mistakenly read Alejandro85 wanting me to install on XP).

If the software has worked with with 'Windows 7' in the past, it should work without issues even now. I brought up the idea of 'compatibility' as I found many users experiencing that problem. But what you said also makes complete sense.

Would like to know if you are facing installation issues with any other 'software' also? Have you tried a 'System Restore' to move back to the time when the system was working fine?

Thanx for trying to help, I'm at my wit's end. Have recently installed other software--no issues. The link you provided doesn't speak directly to PS, but it is an insufficient disk space error for Creative Suite. If that were the case, we have about 25GB available (on D drive where we need to install it).

System Restore is not an option as I mentioned in my original post. I have only 6GB on my C drive (all of these companies think their stuff is hotter than everyone elses and will direct their software to install on C regardless of where you specify--even those that permit it in a custom install--and even when C is set as the default drive in the registry) and of the only 2 restore points available, one did not work and the other was the same day's restore point, which after restoring, did not correct the issue.

Thank you for the reply. The issue looks weird; can be frustrating.

I tried researching but found very little information. Error 101/102 while installing 'Photoshop' could be due to a corrupt/incomplete download; the installer may be unable to extract files at the chosen location. It appears that the files are getting extracted at a writable user location in your case, and not to 'Program Files/Applications folder'. If not, please try doing that.

You also mentioned about trying to install the 'software' in the 'D drive'. Was wondering if you could clear up some space in the 'C drive' to check if that works.

If the issue persists, you may try to initiate a 'direct download', and then process to install. To isolate, you may try using 'Adobe CS6 Trial' available for instant download: Download Adobe CS6 Trials: Direct Links (no Assistant or Manager) | ProDesignTools

Saurabh A, thanx for all the help and please excuse the delay, I have been away for about a week.
I found a back-up copy of our original disk which resolved the issue: a corrupted CD (the CNET Download link you posted takes you to the latest copy of PS, CS6, not PS7, I tried finding that myself, but it seems older versions just aren't available--I have CS6 installed; use each program for different tasks).

It appears that 'corrupt software' on the 'original media' was leading to an 'impaired install'. I tried but was unable to find an older version available for download; therefore suggested you with the recent ones to check if the 'software' that was being used for installation was in a healthy state.

Glad that the issue is fixed; thank you for the confirmation.
