Solved 10Gigabit switch for in home use with a broadband ATT router

I'm inquiring about what the latest news is on any 4 port 10 gigabit switches for home use.
Lots of confusing pricing and descriptions. I even had one of those online chats with ATT which is the
installer of my simple broadband router. He just mentioned the names netgear and d-link. I've had d-link switches in other years for older gear and with older providers. The ATT installer said and advised to just plug everything into the broadband device-- a standard A101.

If a 10Gigabit switch is used does that mean NIC add-in cards are required at the pc's?
This would all be on Win7 as usual.

The goal is to up my speed from the router/switch device (which I have noit seen the specs) for data transfer over ethernet cable (no wireless or other tweaks) between a couple of PC's. I know the switch does not do anything for the DSL itself.


Also tips on used gear if available. Going to the usual Ebay and such has confusing descriptions wherein they say 10G but mean 1000Mps or something. Like I said there's a sly twist I cannot follow.

Your router will be the slowest device. Even if you add a switch you won't get increased speed from the router its self. If your router is 1 Gbps then a switch of 1 Gbps will suffice. Anything more would just be a waste.

What is the goal exactly? Are you trying to network computers together for file sharing or what?

Yes moving files between two machines mostly for backup. I'm doing that now under a simple file sharing workgroup setup.


If it's impractical I thank you for that advice. If the ATT router cannot be bypassed just to use the ethernet cable room to room via the switch then I'll not pursue it further as a misunderstanding what can be done asan inexpensive upgrade.

The router should work right out of the box with network shares. So long as all the computers are wired to it and have Windows networking on it should work. Even wirelessly.

Yes the installation has worked fine. Just wanted to be able to transfer larger media files between
my workstations as a better rate. I can close this as solved since no good solution was found or
possible for the enquiry. Will leave it open for a bit yet.

Is it a wireless router if it has ac that is faster than cable

No not wireless.


I use no wireless and have avoided it totally.


It just may be a bad idea unless one gets a whole kit of equipemnt as they show on you tube builds. More
business oriented.
