My monitor is a 17" CRT. I'm using a Radeon HD 4850 card with the latest Catalyst pack thing and you may have inferred from the title, the resolution 1152x864 is not in the list anywhere.

I have tried setting the max resolution of the monitor to 1152 and it just defaults to 1024x768.

I think it may be a problem with the default Win7 monitor driver and since my monitor is so old I cannot install the drivers for it.

Anyone have similar troubles?

In this case I suspect it is the monitor. Vista and W7 like to "know" what device they are connecting to, and in the case of older monitors, they did not have this capability so Vista/W7 defaults to a generic driver which usually results in lower resolution.

The only suggestion I have would be to look around for a newer monitor, maybe keep an eye on your local Yahoo groups Freecycle area to see if anyone has a newer 17" CRT they are getting rid of for free... or nowadays, you can get a 19" widescreen LCD for $99 or less online, or $130 or more in local stores.
