Most organizations, from the smallest office to the largest enterprises rely on some kind of network monitoring tools to help them analyze performance issues, alert them to threats, and provide reports on the health of the network environment. TechRepublic contributors have kicked the tires on many of them and we've received feedback from members on their own favorites. Here is a round up of some of the most used and recommended. I've used nearly 1/2 of these from time to time at different jobs and such. Also used many of the products mentioned in the comments.

Just curious pparks1, out of those listed, have you had any bad/good experiences with them and which one do you find to be the best all around one?

in my opinion, no best all around. They are all different and meet different needs. one thing I have found over time is there doesn't seem to be any be all end all monitoring system.

Interesting...so they are like Reg Cleaners, AV's and System cleaners...not one gets them all or monitors everything.

Are there any online monitoring solutions? I tried nagio and gave up after the initial install. I’m a newbie in Linux.

I've been using PandoraFms to monitor my company's network (SNMP, ICMP) , the computer systems (Software agents on each system) and to monitor web pages. It's free and easy to handle. You can take a look at it here: Network monitoring

Well, we actually used some of the described tools. And we ended up using
CloudView NMS CloudView NMS Home - Network Management, Monitoring and SCADA solution . Seems like it can monitor/manage practically anything:
SNMP, sysLog TL1, services, web access, servers...). They discovered our network put in maps (they use Google maps).
Secure multi-user web access with configurable profiles . Alarms forwarding via many protocols (including e-mail)
Scalable to thousands of nodes and unlike others they do not charge as your network grows -

It`s strange Total Network Inventory didn`t make up to that list. I`ve been using GLPI+OCSInventory for some time, than Lansweeper but ended up with TNI software licence management though it is not freeware. But in Win network (40 nodes and a couple of Win 2003 servers) this works the best. This dont need any agents installed in other PCs and works great, instead of other software that crashes from time to time. Scheduled check and different notifications, such as e-mail for example.
