1Gbps fiber coming soon...but not in UK!!

"Sonic.net's new approach to broadband involves stringing its own fiber lines to homes and offering bargain-basement pricing; indeed, the new 1Gbps offering is the same price as the company's earlier bonded 40Mbps DSL offering (in which two phones lines each provide 20Mbps of bandwidth to a home). The price even includes home phone service."

Doubt very much it will appear in UK any time soon!! Still, we can all dream :(

See here for details:- 1Gbps fiber for $70—in America? Yup.

Even $70 per month is too expensive for me.

I struggle to get 5Mbps so 20 which Talk Talk advertise would be nice.

well, im lucky to get 4 meg here witch is the limit of what i can get here in my little village.
I could get FTTC but I cringe at BT with there capping and overpriced broadband, plus the terrible homehubs.

Im on o2 at the moment, no slowdowns, good pings, good UK customer call centres and my own netgear router.

Though it would be good to get 32 meg down and 8meg up on FTTC, just got to make that step and see if it would be worth loosing the service and availability i get from o2.

Im getting 8 in a village in SW Scotland but there is no chance for 40 or even 20 as they are not going to upgrade the local exchange for even 21CN let alone FTTC! @F1Fan have you checked out whether you can get Sky service via FTTC? They may be able to offer a better deal than BT.

Hi Maccman, so what speeds are avaiable if you can connect to a 21CN connection? You should be able to get at least 20megs as I believe 21CN capability gives you ADSL2+ which SHOULD give you connectivity up to 24megs :sarc::sarc:(believe that if you will!)

I get about 5-6Mb on Talk Talk LLU. I am about as far as I can be from the exchange.

Agreed. I'm with Plusnet. Good company, good service etc. I'm less than 30m from the exchange and I'm still lucky to get 5mbps. Never seen anywhere near 8mbps.

In my cave up in the hill's I was with o2 and got 1.5Mb D/L & 1Mb U/L. Swapped to Infinity in April and am now getting 38Mb D/L & 9Mb U/L which is a big increase. Apart from the normal 2 modem's burning out (like most other people) everything has been great. Just can't understand why BT are still using cheap and nasty modem's which has been giving problem's from day 1.

'tis good news for most in the states but as per usual, the UK will be mocked and shunned for having such slow internet, what BT need to do is offer FTTC to all companies that use the 21CN, i'm with sky and i get 12MB on copper, good service but the cabinets are right next to each other, one fibre and one copper, stupid BT could make a bomb if they offered it to others.

BT want you to join them not stop with rivals. I wish I could get 12Mb on copper. One thing that did increase my speed was using an i-plate.

Isn't BT's FTTP service "Infinity" 1Gbps? My Homehub has a 1Gbps ethernet port, which according to the documentation is to allow your PC to receive the internet as fast as Infinity allows.

I'm on 21Cn now (finally... we were one of the first places to get broadband when BT started offering it, but it's taken forever to get ADSL2+ here) and I'm getting the full 20Mb/s. I do live just round the corner from the exchange though. Probably more than the 30m that John was reporting. I would guess the poor speeds there are more down to Line quality though.

God I can't wait til my BT contract is up so I can go back to Plusnet... it comes to something when you phone Tech Support and have to explain to THEM how ADSL works.

I get 30mb/s and will never change again.

I've been about the markets looking for a supplier I am happy with. But, their all bad and went for the next best thing which was, the cheapest for the most which, turned out to be Virgin. I'm not moving around anymore as 30mb/s for £21.50/month and phone gets my 'happy as larry' vote.:)

If you can take a look at the OR Engineer's test unit when he's there you will see that the end user can obtain a higher up & down speed's, it was 54.12Mb & 17.65Mb but was set to 38.71 & 10, I ask why the difference and was told that the DSLAM cardmax is 55Mb & 20Mb but are not set to that. Also he told me that at the end of the year BT will be offering 80Mb & 20Mb for FTTC and a lot faster for FTTP.

I've just had a look on the Virgin website and optic fibre is available 2 doors away but neither me or the next door neighbour can get it. I remember about 15 years ago some of our snooty neighbours complained when they started to dig a channel through their gardens so they came back a month after and dug the channel but no cables were put in because UK was now going digital. When I rang back a year or two later they said there would never be cable put in now.
Thank you neighbours.
