In the rural area I live I get 8MB which is better than 90% of rural areas, mostly 2MB when they are lucky and .512mb when they are not.

We are an internet company with 12 people sharing a 5MB line at the mo! The local exchange (Cumbria) is not LLU and not scheduled for any upgrade according to Samknows.co.uk

After turning down the horrifically over-priced leased-line option from BT (2MB D/L, 1MB U/L = £1,700/yr) I've just purchased a Firebrick with bonding token; I'm going to give bonding multiple lines together a shot! *crosses fingers*

As stated I could only get 1.5Mb in my cave here in the Welsh hills, I was looking into if I'm able to sort out better BB but alas even with all the sheep still had no joy . Then Infinity arrived and away I went. There are a lot of people who still have very very poor BB speed in the UK and the company's say it's to expensive to upgrade, having said that BT I still find it hard to work out why since day 1 of their Fiber roll out they have known that the modems are cheap and nasty and fail continually and yet here we are several years down the line they are still using them.

My Dad did work for the BT Broadband Business and what they do (This applies for any BB Service) Is they calculate Your Internet use and how much you pay then generate a speed For example 8MB Download and 0.3 MB Upload - Then they place a limiter in the Exchange Box after that they will refresh their service control panel Thing (Can't remember its real name) and then that will set a limiter of about 1MB so At the moment you are gettng 7MB But then the Router shares out that 7MB To all the devices so the conclution is

You pay for 8MB

You Should recieve the full 8MB - But after the Service control panel etc

You get about 7MB which is then shared to multiple devices in your house so Tops about 5MB

This does not include the Factor of How far away you are from an Exchange box

Fibre Optics are slightly different but the above counts for DSL

@ShadowJK are you talking about the IP Profile?

I don't know how it works for business (although I would assume it is similar) but how much you pay isn't directly related to your speeds on BT's ADSL. It is sort of indirectly related though, as the people on the 10GB package can't get ADSL2+, but frankly, you probably don't want it if you only have 10GB/month.

The IP profile is not set by how much you pay. It's set by your sync speed. You are right,you do lose roughly a meg from your sync speed, and then another 1/2 meg for overheads. Which is ironic... because BT say the profile is needed for overheads.

It is impossible to actually get 8Mb/s on a MaxDSL connection, as the max profile is 7.15, which caps out at about 6.5Mb/s actual download speed. On 21CN I believe the max sync speed is 23999 or something stupid like that, with 20Mb/s being the top profile, and actual thoroughputs of 19.2 (that's what I get anyway...)

I would loved to have had 20Mb like you but for 10+ years all I could get was 1.5/2.0 Mb and it was only April this year I got a good speed. We are the forgotten people out here in the hills and caves.
There is talk now that soon we may be able to get 80Mb down & 20Mb up so that will double what I get now, so not a bad increase but as I said I've only had good speeds for a few months.

iAmDan-- The reason why people still get low BB speeds in the UK IMO is because how BT looks at how to get a fast return from their out lay and so they install & upgrade exchanges in bit City's & Towns and then when the take up is low they moan about it & it's not rocket science to see that these people already have a fast BB speed & are not interested to pay more for an increase. Yet when they upgrade rural exchange's there is a good take up (FTTC went live for ue in April & our cab is a smaller 1 with only 200 slots, 151 slots were taken up in the first couple of weeks) I rest my case.

boogieboy--- I pay around $42US per month for 40Mb down / 10Mb up so it's not cheap.
