Hi! Just upgraded to Windows 7 RC and loving it so far. Really a change over XP and I'm actually liking the organization a bit more!

I've had most of my issues resolved right off the bat as it just "works"! However, 2 issues are plaguing it that I would like to see if I can get some tips on.

1. Sound card won't work. Went to Gigabyte's website and installed the Windows 7 sound drivers, still doesn't show up anything but the HDMI audio... Tried Vista's and XP's drivers in case it was an issue with the Windows 7 release, and nothing changed, nada. Frustrating, no audio at all. The troubleshooting wizard couldn't resolve. Itunes says "problem with audio configuration so may not be able to play audio" and sure enough it can't. Nothing comes through headphones at all. This is with the integrated sound card. I'm thinking I might need to install a PCI soundcard now... :-(

2. Power options. One of my pet peeves with XP hasn't been resolved. System stability with standby is terrible for me at least. I put into standby, half the time it goes into standby, then just kicks back on to desktop. The other times, it fails to reboot correctly and ends up on a black screen with a blinking cursor. I can live with no standby, but as my computer draws a ton of power, I like to have this option rather than shutting down each time.

Any tips pros? I'm glad I'm in the W7 world now, though I wish Ubuntu would just take over the world and provide Office 2007 integration without twisting an arm :-)

ps- anyway to get Microsoft to reset the internet activation count for office? I had to call last time and it was annoying, they claimed over phone wouldn't reset activation over internet option, is this true?

Hi and welcome to sevenforums

First you are running almost the oldest version of win 7. the newer ones are even better. second sound card. If you put your system specs (lower left corner of your posts) we wold know about your hardware. Sleep works fine in win 7, and ubuntu port can even run in a win 7 window.

Let us know about your hardware

Ken

First I want to think you for filling out the system specs...hopefully we can get a solution shortly for your issue!

1. Did you try to unistall the default Audio drivers and then install the drivers from Gigabyte?

2. Setting the power plan to high performance will do...you will still be able to put the computer to sleep. If your having an issue with sleep than either a bad driver is in effect for your GFX or you are overclocking

1. Yes, I have tried uninstalling default drivers and reinstalling.
2. I did get a creative audidgy card PCI card to work fine with no issue... but I still can't use the front headphone port now as it's wired to the motherboard's sound card. Disappointing.
3. HOW do I get a newer build or upgrade it? I got this for free through my school, and expires June 2010 by which time I'm sure a new version will be uploaded.
4. Sleep doesn't work consistently... and i have the power plan set correctly... AND i am not overclocking.

I'd love to get a newer build, but don't know how to, and to remove that annoying Build Text on the desktop.... hint? :D

Win7 7100 was very buggy. Glad you got the Audio working.
There are ways to remove the Evaluation Copy. MS does not like for it to be removed...(can and does cause problems) recommend leave it alone.

The RC (release candidate. build 7100) is the latest publically available build. I don't think it was buggy, at least compared to the original public beta (7000).

Later ones, including the RTM (release to manufacturing, build 7600), are available from unauthorized sources (torrents, warez sites).

There are no keys available to activate the RTM. It will run without activation for 30 days. Supposedly that limit can be reset 3 times, for a total unactivated life of 120 days. If you could find a copy, you could run it past GA (general availability, 22 October). The sticking point might be that it is rumored that a Win7 upgrade license will only install on a system with an *activated* qualifying OS. You probably also would not be able to enter an upgrade license key into an already-installed copy of Win7; that was true of the upgrade license key for Vista.

The latest builds that I've seen that accept the RC keys without any hacks are 7229 (32 bit) and 7232 (64 bit).

I'm not sure what to suggest about the onboard sound drivers. You could try the slightly newer ones (2.31, vs. 2.27 at Gigabyte) directly from Realtek:

Realtek

Sleep seems to be a dicey thing. I had an Abit P35 board, and it wouldn't wake from sleep in Windows Vista if the board was overclocked at all. My current board (Asus P6T Deluxe, X58 chipset) sleeps nicely, even though I have the bus clock at 200 MHz (default is 133 MHz). (Had to back off the I7 920's multiplier to only 19, though, or 3.8 GHz.) It's not clear that any changes in Win7 will fix your problem. Perhaps Gigabyte will produce a BIOS update that'll help.

that was very helpful. For a long time I was thinking I was just retarded to not figure out why sleep didn't work, but since I've built my first system I've discovered compatibility on non-oem system can be tricky and challenging for the best.

i'll stick with 7100 and upgrade later when it will near expire. It works great for my purposes and the other sound card worked, I can deal with the inconvience for now :-)
thanks!
