2 LAN ports?

Oh wow! So many responses!

My current router is gigabit, so I can use a gigabit switch. However, doesn't the gigabit switch need to be plugged into the router?

No, you are going to use the gigabit switch to connect your pc to the NAS and the home plug.
This way you have full speed access to the NAS from your pc.

That's brilliant, I always thought the switch had to connect to the router. I would prefer to get a Netgear one as I like the make, it's always been reliable for me. Someone further up mentioned one at £12 - could you point me in the right direction please? It sounds silly, but I would also like a black one if possible, as it will match all the gear downstairs.

Thanks so muchm, guys - UsernameIssues, your setup diagram was spot on :-)

Right, purchased switch after screw up by seller.

Installed easy as pie.

Got internet.

No NAS - it comes up in "My Computer" but when I try to access it it says "network path not found"

Argh! Any ideas?

Quick update - I can see it on the network, from upstairs computer, downstairs computer and laptop. I've run the Synology Assistant and that sees it, but when I try to connct "Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at 192.168.0.2"

Are you sure it is a switch and not a router? 0.2 seems a very low IP given you have other devices on your network.

Haha! The randomness of computers strikes again! It's decided to work :-)

No idea why, one minute it was offline, then it decided to love me.

I have internet and a hardwired NAS - words fail me how good this is, it's been a long time, and you guys have been absolutely amazing, I couldn't have done it without your help.

THANK YOU!!

NAS pointers

Assuming you mean you cannot connect to the NAS it could be any number of reasons.
If it is a microsoft system it can take as long as 58 minutes to recognise a new node on the network.
Your NAS may be in conflict with your router i.e both router and NAS may be set up as DHCP servers.
Your current system may be using a different subnet to the NAS.
A firewall may be preventing access. Turn it off and recheck. Don't forget to turn back on after the check.
You may need to re-configure your default local DNS numbers.
First ping 192.168.0.2 to check whether 0.2 actually exists.
Run ipconfig/all on your local machine. Is the gateway address the same as used by the NAS?
No solution but some things to look at!
