Hi,

On a second hand HP Z820 workstation, running Windows 7 Pro x64, I have this problem:

1/after entering my password, I have a consistent 30 seconds delay
2/ then the screen goes to black (if I have a background image), or solid desktop color (if I have a solid color set as the bg) for consistently 70 seconds.

None of those happen when I boot in safe mode.

I don't have much installed on this workstation; just two rendering applications, I don't even plan to give it a network access or install anything else besides Houdini, so no A/V. I just want the raw power of the machine. I have a feeling that this delay after login may be caused by something defective, and I certainly don't want this workstation to spend CPU cycles on something else that what it's supposed to do.

So, can you suggest a method to find what is causing these problems ?

Thanks.

Bonjour,
Run msconfig.
- disable all start up items and all none MS services.
- Reboot
If it reboots normally, enable all start up items.
If it doesn't, enable fist half of start up items
- Reboot

Make this procedure (enabling half of the disabled start up items and none MS services) till you find the bad guy on start up items or on services.

I found the guilty service:

RealTek Audio Service, from Realtek Semiconductor.

I disabled it and the startup sequence is normal now.

Also, I forced the sound chipset driver to update, and reenabled the service at startup.

It is no longer problematic; the version of the current driver has a more recent release date, but a lower build version though.
