Hi!
I have a problem. I have a computer I use sometimes with Windows 7. I think it doesn't take Windows 7 or wath ever u say. I think the computer is to slow. I think about to install an other operating system for example windows 98 to do it faster? The thing is that I don't know how to do that.

Can someone please help me?

I'm !

OS
Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
I don't want to format the drive because the cpu isn't mine. Can't i just partition my drive and install 98 from that?

If the box isn't your why are you fooling with it. Have you asked the owner if they want Win 98 (a 13+ year old operating system) on what might be a newer PC.

Have you tried cleaning up Win7 a bit to see if it will run faster? Let's help you:

How much RAM and what CPU does it have - click Start button, rightclick Computer, choose Properties to see. What is computer make/model?

Type "msconfig" into start search box, on Startup tab uncheck everything except AV and gadgets/stikynotes if you use them - the rest are freeloaders on your RAM/CPU, Startup time and can spy on you. Startup Programs - Change

Use a lightweight free AV like MS Security Essentials with the Win7 firewall for best performance. Microsoft Security Essentials

Download and install CCleaner then click Run Cleaner, and on the Registry tab "Scan for Issues" then Fix found Issues. CCleaner - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

Make sure your Windows Updates are up to date. Check optional Updates for newer drivers after enabling Auto-updating for Hardware here: Automatically get recommended drivers and updates for your hardware

Next download and install Puran defragger, on Additional Operations tab check "Puran Intelligent Optimizer" option, select Boot Time defrag, restart to defrag to perfectly organize your HD.

Now test everything you use the machine for and report back if there is any improvement, along with your make/model and we can give you additional steps.

Windows 98 won't install on a machine that has more than 1 gig of RAM, I've noticed. A good number of years ago (around 2005 or so), I tried installing Windows 98 on a machine that had around 2 gigs of RAM, and every time I tried to install it, it would freeze and not go anywhere else. I tried installing it multiple times with it freezing in the same place. Also note: Windows 98 does NOT receive anymore updates from Microsoft. Drivers and PC games are no longer created for 98, either. Most games these days require Windows XP or later.

If you're serious about installing 98, make absolutely sure you have less than a gig of RAM, otherwise, it won't work. I've tried this, trust me.

Hardware drivers are also not offered to Windows 98, either! None of the later hardware has 98 Drivers. Even if you managed to install 98 onto a recent machine, NONE of your hardware will have drivers for a 10+ year old OS if your hardware is 2004 or created after that.

Upgrade to at least 1gb of RAM and you'll notice a big difference.

Installing an extra 1GB of RAM should bump up your speed a fair bit, but for Windows 7 to really show it's potential, you'll be better off with at least 2 GB of RAM in your system.

can't i just downgrade the operating system instead?

There is no downgrade path for Win7. Vista would use as much or more resources.

XP might run well on it. Do you have retail copy of XP, or did it possibly come with the machine in question so that we could help you reintsall it with that license?

If you upgrade your RAM to 1 or 2 gb you can probably run Win7 fine on it. Do you need to know how to go about this?

Only if you either format the hard drive, or create a new partition if you have the space.

Bingo, nice catch Ray: 64 bit Win7 would run like molasses on that hardware.

Fredrik, can you find a 32 bit installer for your licensed version to clean reinstall, while upgrading to at least 1-1 gb of RAM. We can help you with the steps for each of these.

Reinstalling Windows 7

Google your exact make/model + memory upgrade then read the results to find out your exact RAM specs and the prices. Easiest though is to go to the counter at CompUSA to get the exact RAM for a good price - call ahead to check if you want.

downgrade to windows xp instead of win 98 update ,

edit , you will need the xp disk
