2010 Hurricane prediction

So a recent Reuters article says the Colorado State University hurricane forecasting team predicted 8 major storms this season. Well, even one can be bad news. I was pondering a question; if it wasn't for the side affects of radiation, I wonder what would happen to a Category 4 if you dropped a nuke right in the eye out at sea? :huh:

With the way that some scientists are, don't encourage them, they will probably want to experiment.

And I think it would destroy the storm.
Though to be honest, I think just a big regular bomb would do the same. All it needs to do is blow away the clouds and pressure with the shock wave, which should be achievable with a large bomb.

I don't believe that it would work. If the bomb was place in the eye of the storm, the air speed is calm, and the blast wouldn't erase the airflow pattern of the outer circumference of the storm. Hurricane are caused by a low pressure at the eye, which the bomb would negate only momentarily, when the initial blast pressure disappeared, it would be replaced by an implosion that would magnify the original low pressure core. In the end, the result would be a stronger storm, carrying radiation with it to where ever it decided to ramble.

Who said you had to detonate it in the eye? Why not in the outer wall?

Though you probably would need a really big bomb to have an effect on it.

Where ever it was detonated, it still wouldn't erase the natural force of the storm. The true cause of a storm is airflow, which is generated by pressure patterns. The clouds, rain, etc. are merely secondary effects. I think that you are underestimating nature's strength and force.

My point is merely that an explosion creates a pressure wave that pushes outwards. If you have seen the videos of the atomic bombs tests, all the clouds in the area are pushed away, with a powerful outwards wind.

While you may be 100% correct in that it would not stop the storm, I think it may have at least an effect upon it.

Yes, there is an outward force, but in turn, that is replaced by an inward force as air returns to fill the low pressure area created by the blast. This would intensify the pressure gradient that existed prior to the blast. There is no doubt that it would effect the storm, but not in the manner that you seem to think.

Alright, just for the discussion 3 bombs, detonated in succession.
Not nessesarily in line with the surface, but vertical with one underwater and the last at cloud level. Meh, it would probably be easier to convert basements to reinforced bomb/storm shelters.

There is one surefire way to blast a hurricane away, use enough bombs to destroy the Earth, or perhaps just create a anti-gravity device that would cause the atmosphere to loose it attraction to the Earth.

Or, you could do as I did once, years ago, when I was a pilot in Houston, and a hurricane was just off the coast, heading directly for Houston. All of the pilot were evacuating their aircraft to points inland, and a friend told me to do likewise, and when I told him that it wasn't going to hit Houston, he gave me a puzzled grimace and jumped in his plane. It was at that point that the storm did a 360° counter clockwise circle to the left and went inland in Louisiana. When he returned, he always gave me a strange look, but never mentioned it again.

Just remember that these guys predicted last year would be an active hurricane season - and thankfully, it wasn't. I went through four of them in 2004. What a year and what a mess!

I didn't KNOW, in the terms that you mean. When I said it, I was surprised also, but felt compelled to blurt it out. I'm not going to explain it much more than that, because that would take the topic off in a tangent to an area that this forum doesn't permit. I will say that the saying that words have power is more literal than most think.

It is all a chain of elements that are interrelated. Heat, pressure, moisture, etc.

Thats all we need. A radioactive Hurricane. The government drops the bomb and they say "Opps" it didn't work so when you evacuate don't plan on coming back cause your town will glow in the dark. Don't think I want to be in the path of the first one they test.
