Good evening everyone,
A friend of mine brought me an older Lenovo running Win7 Hone Premium with Pentium chip set. It has 4 gigs of ram and a 254 gig hard drive. Can the computer be rebuilt? I know with that chip set, it will be slow as molasses on a cold winter day. I want to go to at least an Intel i5.

Likely the cpu is soldered. Depends on the model. No one can answer unless you list the specs.

It should be fairly easy on a older Lenovo to get to the CPU by simply taking the back cover off. If you can get the Model number, there are prolly YouTube Vids showing it done. You can compare the performance of the different CPUs on PassMark Software - Video Card (GPU) Benchmarks - High End Video Cards or somewhere like Intel Pentium P6200 vs Core i5 560M

All except the highest rated of these discontinued models are fairly inexpensive, just remember the Arrandale Products formerly Arrandale CPUs are not multi-threaded and won't preform like later generations. You can also watch Vids on YouTube showing the proper way to apply thermal paste.

Thank you!!! What site do you recommend to buy the CPU? Will it come with the graphics card or is that something else I would need to buy? I may change the hard drive as well.

Nothing You can do about the graphics, the card is integrated on the board and not very powerful. A SSD would give the laptop a little extra speed. You might have to look for a used CPU either on eBay, Amazon or Intel CPU Processors

Artic Silver 5 I believe is the most recommended Thermal Paste on most Forums ?? and I normally buy from Newegg

The web link you gave me, is that for the type of CPU that is compatible? You hag mentioned a company that started with a C. I don't see conversation in front of me but I am sure you know what I am talking about.
The CPUs I saw on the link you sent are fairly cheap. Would I need to do some soldering? Or does it snap into place like memory? Sorry to keep bothering you with the basic questions.

What do you think about this to install into the Lenovo?

You Need to post the Complete specs. Also open a Admin CMD prompt and type in msinfo32 and post what it says for Bios Version/Date. No a AMD CPU can't be used to replace one from Intel.

Now I'm gone get some sleep

See you posted before I did

If you have a Intel Pentium CPU you have to replace it with a Intel CPU, not a AMD CPU.

The link furnished by Bat has the options. http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Pentium_Dual-Core_Mobile/P6200.html

You have to be careful as the Computer BIOS can not be compatible with all the CPU listed.
I would look at Lenovo to see what were the CPU options for the computer.

Thank you! I think I bugged Bat 1 to death last night. LOL I want to do this on my own. Does the CPU snap into place or does it need to be soldered? I plan to replace the CPU, The HD and add memory.

On the link site it says that the CPU is on a G1 Socket. (never touch the Socket contacts).
For the memory, don't mix types. My suggestion is to buy one exactly as the one you have (same brand, same speed, same latency) or buy a matched pair.

I'm not near a place to look this up but what do you mean by a G1 Socket? Just by what you're saying, I'm assuming I can simply snap the CPU in place. I also understand I need to add thermal film. Thank you for all you guys help.

Different cpu's fit different sockets.

If your socket is G1 you need to make sure you get a cpu designed to fit a G1 socket.
