 OKAY I give up. Uninstalled, reinstalled, tried on various PCs, different platforms and different models to no avail. Three of my card readers refuse to see my SD/HC class cards when they all worked fine three months ago. The problem isn't the card because I use many and all are seen on my X99 platform in a newer card reader. Admittedly these are older card readers. (One is a ProSys brand if that tells you anything.) But to have all three suddenly cut out like that almost points to a Microsoft update issue. The other one is an old Sabrent (and I do mean old) the drivers "say" they load okay but only the USB 2.0 port seems to work on that one. It just seems odd that all three card readers (being different brands) would die on different PCs at roughly the same time. All three card readers are indeed old and I forget the brand name of the last one. I'm just wondering if it is even worth forking out money for replacements since they all have to be USB 2.0 type readers in this case scenario. Any suggestions? Anyone know of any newer, strictly USB 2.0 card readers that still function? The one on my X99 platform has USB 3.0 and it functions fine. 3.0 isn't an option on the other PCs. They're for my daughters and they are quite happy for now with 2.0.

NOT ENOUGH ROOM TO LIST ALL HARD DRIVES HERE. Cuts me off at 5. Did you know that if you run a network you can scan your PC for viruses via other PCs using several different virus scanners? No virus scanner gets it all. This is narrows down the window for contracting a virus. By using multiple operating systems you can use different virus scanners with no risk of conflict.

Hi 777,

Stab in the dark here, as you've tried on multiple comps.
AND assuming that there all upto date, ROLL BACK one of them to a time when the card readers worked.

If it then works it would have to an update,

note USB3 is backward compatible so that USB2's work on USB3 ports.

Roy .

Card readers are cheap. You've already spent a huge amount of time with these; get new ones.

I just bought an off-the-shelf card reader at my local WalMart. It works perfectly when I plug it into a USB2 port.

I use Samba to share my data drive with the other computers at my house and with my guest session in VMWare Workstation Player.
I felt much the same, Mr. Jim. but living on a fixed income with little ones can be challenging.Life has its plusses and minuses. Can't seem to find the right rollback point so I'm thinking this is likely another example of Microsoft's forced obsoletion. I'd opt for the peripheral approach but peripherals can get annoying when you already have ten dozen of the things. My girls desks are full of them. I like to keep those bays full whenever possible. :)

Torchwood thank you. These PCs are my old ones handed down to my daughters with loving care and creative expression. Just like my girls (I have four) each one is built differently to suit their personal tastes. Only one of the PCs actually uses onboard 3.0 and that slot has already been spoken for. I am a bit of a senti-MENTAL-ist when it comes to personalizing PCs and just a bit of an ANAList. My girls are gamers. I'm the acting IT/BUILDER/TECH "fix it Daddy" guy so the girls like their card readers and each of them also has their own camera among other gizmos to play with. I'll tinker around in the bios on these PCs a bit more and if that fails I suppose I'll start looking for new card readers.

What is nagging me is whether fully functional, USB 2.0 only based card readers even exist anymore now that Windows 10 type updates keep getting issued to "fix" those older operating system issues. Will card readers like this even work with Windows 10? (Not that I'll ever buy Windows 10).
