I had a drive failure and had to reload win 7 pro 32 bit. Also reloaded office 2010. After everything up and running i had 288 updates pending. They install in about 2 hours and then on reboot, "update failure, reverting" message. tried several times. even installing a few manually, same failure. ????

No luck. Did the hot fix and the update list dropped to 188 for some reason. ran the updates and it again failed on reboot after all had been installed. system then reverted back and again i show 188 updates waiting to install.

Are you saying re-install win-7,(start over again) as the thread you point to suggests? And then following the instructions to install those stand alone updates?

I got a hard time understanding some things so can You explain "I had a drive failure and had to reload win 7 pro 32 bit." Not sure if that's a Fresh install on a new disk, or a Factory reset on a disk that's been error checked and surface scanned ?

You could try deleting everything in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download setting WUS to Never check for update and then restarting the PC. (That'll make sure WUS isn't running the simple way.) Run the standalone installers KB3020369 then KB3172605 , restart the PC and turn WUS back to checking for updates and try again.

When I do fresh installs of Win 7 SP1, I use the Simplix Pack to bring it up to date without installing superseded or telemetry related KBs. Info can be found on MyDigitalLife but You'd need to join to see the links as well as having a bittorret client to download. https://forums.mydigitallife.net/th...egrate-hotfixes-into-win7-distribution.45005/

Hi,
Would be more straight forward to start over knowing what you do now :)

Thanks but that's not going to happen again. Two days of reloading everything and still not working. Have done this twice. This laptop is necessary as it has an RS-232 serial port needed to interface with equipment i service. That's the only reason i keep it as new laptops are USB only. I'll use it as is until it dies again as everything works, just not updated. It's not very old but a POS from that big seller. Win 7 was also a pain on all our office machines so we switched everything else to 10 with new equipment. Still have one laptop on XP for the same reason, RS-232 port.

Thanks again!!

OK, I'd read Your previous posts about not being able to update after the rollback from Win 10. You're using a Genuine Dell Reinstallation ISO so I'll assume there's nothing wrong with the install media. So it's time to figure out what is wrong.

In Post #4 TrashZone posted a Link for the Windows Update Posting instructions: Windows Update Posting Instructions
If You've done Step #2, three times, rebooting between runs, does sfc /scannow find errors or not ? If there are errors then You'll likely need to do a fresh or refresh install. Running an out of date copy of Win 7 online is a Big Not Good.

If there aren't any sfc errors You need to follow Steps #3 and #4. Anyone attempting to help you will need the error codes and CBS logs. Just waking up from My old person Nap so You'll have to look up the uploading instructions or wait for someone to come along and post a link.

Also can You tell Me which CPU is in Your Rig, as well as if You're running Norton Before attempting the updates ?

Ooops see the uploading instructions in step #5: Screenshots and Files - Upload and Post in Seven Forums

Can't even run SFC. Tells me only an administrator during a console session can run SFC. Hell, I am the administrator and only user.

Can't answer your questions. It is a 5410 laptop with the update problem, bought new for my business some years ago, and we used the disk came with it to reload win 7 pro. The 7010 is another PC on my network and runs win 10 pro. I access this forum with the 7010 as the laptop, without the updates, is not being used on the internet at this time. In fact, the laptop is rarely needed on the internet except to download machine firmware for the business. otherwise, its a service machine only.
