2GB micro SD card crashes Windows 7!

I took the 2GB microSD card out of my phone and put it in an adapter and plugged it into a USB port. The computer does try to read it but is never able to do so and I get the "not responding" message. If I click the red x to close the explorer window, it crashes windows explorer! The task bar and all desktop icons disappear! This is pretty darn lame! I tried to look up issues online and indeed many people with 2GB microSD cards had issues - on Vista. Amazingly, they don't seem to have fixed the issues in Windows 7? Anybody know a solution to this?

BTW, at first it was intermittent. I could get into some folders on the drive. In fact I was able to move everything but the DCIM folder. I was also able to move some of the images from the DCIM folder, but now I get the "not responding" every time. It was as if one image files was corrupted and once that image got to the top of the folder, it wouldn't read anymore. I say this because the auto image transfer would start up and show the first image until I moved some of the images off the card. Now auto image import hangs too. Note that I tried turning image import off and I also configured the whole card and subfolders as document folders (known issue with Windows 7 trying to read some video formats causing it to hang if the folder is set to something other than documents). BTW, that file at the top of the folder is not corrupt - moved over fine when the card was in the phone.

I also tried different USB ports and different adapters without luck, but the card reads fine in the phone. So I can get my data off the card, but I'd really like to fix something that causes Windows to crash!

1. Update your card reader driver.

2. Check Event Viewer for a log of the crashes.

It isn't one particular reader. I tried several different readers and USB hubs with the same results. If there is an external driver for reading cards on Windows 7 64 bit, where would I find it? I checked the Kingston site but didn't find anything. I have all the latest motherboard drivers (to be sure, I reinstalled all of them).

I tried both the motherboard and memory card manufacturers. I put a question in to Kingston but haven't gotten a response yet (likely will on Monday).

nearly all micro sd cards are high capacity, a lot of pc card readers cannot read the format and throw up an error, is your card reader capable of reading HC cards? :)

At least half the readers I tried can do SDHC, but the 2GB micro SD card is a few years old and is not HC.

I'm having the same problem using a 2GB regular SD card in my laptop's built-in SD card reader. I have AVG Free 2011 and Windows Defender running at all times, but I haven't noticed AVG trying to scan an SD card, nor has Windows Defender ever notified me about starting a scan. Before I updated the card reader from the HP Softpaq, this problem has occurred within 2 minutes of inserting the card; now it starts after a few hours unless I remove the card. Is there a quick and easy fix, or do I have to spend a whole weekend debugging my system?
