3-8 second lag during gamin'

app

Hi rollhun541,

attached app for you with source code (written for CBuilder). Run exe from "Debug" folder. If it does not run let me know.
If application launches - press "start" - for application to start periodic hdd accesses. Press "stop" to stop it. Periodic access occurs every 30 seconds.

Regards, greeniesbest.

Hi rollhun541,
app creates hddload.dat on "c:\temp" and on "d:\temp" folders and fills it with 1000 bytes. After 30 sec these files are recreated and filled again. So there must be c and d disks and if you do not have d: disk or you do not wish to use "temp" folder and you do not wish update app byself let me know - i will update and repost it here.

I tried to run the PHDDLoader but it says that "borlndmm.dll is missing. To solve the problem try to reinstall the program".

I don't know what this means but downloading dll files from websites arent the best idea, right?

Well, acutally I have reinstalled windows on the notebook a day ago when I got really desperate so atm I have ultimate 64 bit on it. I installed the system on drive C and drive D is completely empty at the moment.

Moreover I don't have Temp directory on either drives. Will these be created during the process? I don't know how to solve this dll problem, I hope you know:).

And by the way thank you for helping me.

Best regards,
Rollhun

Hi rollhun541,
recompiled app with with disabled "Dynamic RTL" option. Please try one. Hope this should help. If not let me know. It is needed to create temp folder on c: and d: disks. App will not create it for you.

K the app is working. Try it with World of Warcraft. The thing is that the random lag spikes still happen, tho it seems less frequently:(. Is it possible to make this program create these files let's say every second instead of every 30 seconds? It might solve the problem, dunno, just guessing.

By the way what games did you have problems with prior you programmed this app?

This is pretty much annoying for me since the only game I play is WoW for which I pay subscription as well...

I'm considering to go against Acer and require a new laptop, a different model, maybe aspire timlineX 5820tg or sth, in the service they said that there is a way to apply for new laptop, tho it's a tough process, so if that should fail, I definately need to find a solution to this.

I tried almost every forum and you seem to be the only one who came up with something. Other people also having problems with online games. On Blizzard forums found several players with this problem with Acer 7745g and I'm getting to the point to think that this model is close to bullshit if it comes to online gaming:(.

So getting back to the topic: can you configure the app to work every second? Or would that be too much work for HDD or CPU? I'm greenhorn with this stuff that's why I ask.

Thx for trying to help me:)

Rollhun541

Hi rollhun541,

In the begining, I was playing Unreal Tournament 2004 over internet (deathmatch and onslaught modes). After two weeks of suffering beating cause of this lag - it become apparent for me the need for some serious action regarding the lag. Over internet i found info about WD drives "spin off" behaviour which can not be disabled and this behaviour corresponds well with "lag behaviour" i noticed. First i considered replacing HDDs for my laptop.

But I created this app and problem completely goes away. Also tried Starcraft II (not online) and lag occurs if not to run the HddLoad app. This lag occurs not just to gaming. If to work on something and laptop has not accessed hdd for some time and then tries to access it - this lag occurs as well. If this lags starts annoying - i just run the HddLoad app. If to watch movies - i HAVE to run this app as well.

Its look strange that it does not help for you. May be the problem not just with hdd but with connection or graphical settings - i dont know. Its sad that it does not help you.

Modified app for you for 1 second period access.

Regards, Greeniesbest

It seems it is working. several hours of gaming and no sign of lag.

Let's hope it will keep up to my expectation during tonight's raid as well. If it will then this is sort of a cure the Acer 7745g suffers from, and tbh I think that everyone buying this notebook suffers from this.

Let's hope the best.

I'll post thwe final result after raid.

Rollhun541

Sorry for dredging up this old post, however I am having the same problems as listed here. My laptop only has a C-Drive and no D-Drive is there any way an updated version of the HDD Loader program without D:/temp required? Thank you.

updated app

Hi lilbalko,

attached updated app for you. Use "HDDLoader" folder from attached zip file. There is "Files.txt", where it is possible to specify files (with full path), which must be created by PHDDLoader.exe regularly. Just delete second line in this file and PHDDLoader.exe will not access d:\temp. The second "LoadIntervalSecond.txt" allows to specify period at which PHDDLoader.exe must create files (in other words - touch the hard disks). Default is 30 seconds but any interval can be specified.
If any problems let me know.

Thank you kindly for your swift response! I did as instructed without issue, and will be back with a status update as soon as I have a chance to test it in action. I set the time interval to one second, is this going to cause longer than normal load times or performance problems?

Hi lilbalko,

The previous version of phddloader.exe (posted here almost 1 year ago) has interval of 1 second and as i understand it causes no problems (otherwise there may be additional posts on this thread). I do not think accessing every second two files (1Kb for each file) should put any, visible by user, performance impact on the system. I use 30 seconds interval cause firstly i tried 30 seconds interval and this interval solves the problem for me.
