could i make the vga and hdmi ports work at the same time? i am using a dell studio xps 1340 runing win 7

Just because you see three ports on your graphics card, doesn’t necessarily mean you can use all of them at the same time.
I looked up NVIDIA GeForce 9400M G on the web, and I could not see anything that confirms the chipsets capabilities, with regard to multiple displays.
One other useful indicator would be to open the graphics device driver control panel on your laptop, and search for a multi-display option. If the option is available, then there is a chance you could run two or more monitors at the same time, using that chipset.
