Clean install using 64 bit retail version. Formatted the drive but after a few minutes after completing the file copying process the computer restarts and an error message pops up. ....computer restarted unexpectedly...

Underclocked the 8 gb mem stick. tried only with 2 gb mem stick and still doesn't work. Nothing externally attached, just 1 hard drive, ATI 4650 card, DVD Rom.

32 bit works though. Don't know what the problem is. tried looking at the setup log at the panther directory but couldn't understand a thing. It wasn't that descriptive hehe.

Motherboard: Asus P5K-E Wifi
VC: Palit Sonic 4850 256mb
PSU:HEC 700 watts
HD: 80 GB sata
Processor: Intel Q6600

Nothing overclocked

Create a bootable USB thumb and try your 64 install from there. Rules out a few known issues in one shot.

still the same problem. it happens during the setup is starting services process.

A lot of times when I see a forced reboot, it has been CPU overheating. You don;t indicate in your specs, but I presume you do have a heat sink and fan on your CPU? It doesn't make much sense though why the 32 would work, but the 64 would not other than the architecture. Could it be the 64bit install is damaged?

64 bit has more problems with power profiles and fan settings. It usually runs hotter.

dont think thats the problem but you never know. get app that monitors cpu temps like everest.

I had an older PC when I started my last job and it turned out to be a bad CPU as I would have the random reboots all the time. That's just my thoughts.

Have you run Memtest to check out all of your memory? It sounds like some of your memory above the 3.7 GB mark or so may be bad, and when x64 accesses it, you have an issue.

The platform of an OS has nothing to do with a system's temperatures. If you have an x64 under more load, such as more apps running, it could affect temperature, but the OS alone has nothing to do with this...so simply saying x64 runs hotter than x86 isn't logical...it would be due to a load from something other than the OS.

Either way, start with an all night session of Memtest.

Frost, he said he took the 8gb mem out and put 2gb in. Granted, they both could be bad, but the chances of that I would think would be small.

I don't disagree with you though that a mem test should be done just to rule it out, but I think with him swapping the mem out, he may have already covered the memory issues.

What about checking for BIOS updates? Just grasping at straws now, but...

I've read numerous forum posts on other sites where people claim this, but I've never seen anything officially stating this, or even a logical explanation as to why. I can't say I've noticed any differences across any of my systems, including one that went from Vista x86 to Windows 7 x64.

To be fair, I've also read numerous forum posts and websites proclaiming that aliens exist and are walking among us as well, but haven't given any proof either. I don't typically buy anything I read as fact, especially in a forum. Maybe this is, who knows, but it wasn't the case with Vista, and hasn't been the case in my own systems.

Yes, but an x64bit processor has more gerbils in it than the 32bit does, so just the heat from all those critters would make it run hotter! :D

already did a memtest way back. I have 4 pcs 2 gb stick, swapped, and tried on different slots.

Is there a way to know what service went wrong during the starting up services?
Maybe it's a 64 bit driver problem.

Came from xp 64 and vista 64 before with no problems.
Already tried different ISOs from different release and still the same problems.

I only got windows 7 64 bit to work once and that's when I used a beta build before 7600.

xeth,

Do you have any other video card you can try, like an old PCI video card with a standard 15 pin D connector to the monitor.. for the install with 2gb ram.

Then if you get it installed & running smooth. You can put the ATI card back in

Will try with an old AGP card or PCI card if it works. But why would this be a problem? The card is very popular.

Some video cards just seem to be a problem on install, once win7 is fully installed & they are put back in with the right drivers, then they are fine also. Confusing, yes
