How can I tell if my Dell D430 Ltitude is 32 or 64 bit? I went into the setup screen, but found nothing on 32 or 64 bit.
Thank,
Bill

Download HWInfo32 from the drivers guide in my sig and post a screenshot of the summary screen. However, your specs are barely enough for x86.

It depends on what CPU you have. The D430 either came with a U1400 core solo CPU or a U7600 Core 2 Duo CPU. If you've got the U7600 you're fine with 64bit, if you've got the U1400 you can only use 32bit..

Go here to check the specs of your machine..

if you want to find out if you can run 64 bit windows download the windows 7 upgrade adviser it has a section dedicated to 64 bit - although looking at your specs i would stay with 32bit 64bit can recognize & use over 4gb of ram but you only have 2gb anyway exactly why do you want 64bit ? what do you use your PC for?

I have a friend who will sell me a 64 bit, but I do not want to open it unless I lnow it will work on my system.
Thanks,
Bill

Post a screenshot HWInfo32's summary screen. The link is in the drivers guide in my sig. I wouldn't bother - you will not see any benefit.

According to your system specs, you have only 2 gigs of RAM. Absolutely no need to install 64-bit, you should IMO keep the 32-bit.

So you are saying stay with XP Pro? What if I can find a 32 bit Windows 7 Pro. Would I benefit from that upgrade?

Thaks,

That and his CPU model - it may not support x64 extensions/architecture, that's why the screenshot is necessary.

For the hardware, XP is better, but for features and everything else, 7 is the way to go.

Right, and that's the dilema. I LUUUVVVEE Windows 7, and XP is getting OOLLDD. So... what 'cha think. Is XP Pro better because it just works better with the hardware, or is 7 better because it is cooolller???
Thank for everyone's opinion.

Personally, I wouldn't want to use 7 with it, but try it and find out. XP is obsolete - 7 has better security, better looks, better feature support - DXVA 2.0 etc - try it and see.

Curious. YOU would use XP with it, then in the next sentence you say how cool 7 is, and how old XP is. Give me your opinion of a way to go. All things considered Windows 7 Pro 32 bit or XP Pro??????????? in my situation.
Thanks,
Bill

.
You may still be able to install the Windows 7 RC if you want to try before you buy. (Can someone say whether or not the RC is still viable?) If you image your XP install first it wouldn't be hard to switch back if necessary.
