Solved 32 to 64 file & program conversion

I have windows7 32 bit. Will my jpeg, music & achvd files convert to 64 bit. As i understand, any 32 bit programs will either have to be redownloaded eg sony's PMB or repurchased eg corel's video pro X4 to run in win7 64. Is this correct?

It's my understanding you can't do a Custom Install from 32 bit to 64 bit. A clean install, by definition, means everything gets wiped. It doesn't mean 32 bit programs won't work. I have Vista 64 bit SP1 and nearly all my 32 bit stuff works. It's the 16 bit stuff that won't work without some emulator like DosBox or some other Virtual Machine. 64 bit Windows has 32 bit emulation built in(Windows On Windows.)

Most video stuff hasn't been updated to 64 bit anyway. People doing video conversions etc. on 64 bit systems, except for a few trail-blazers, are using 32 bit software.)

As for specific retail software I would go on the particular site and see if you must run a dedicated 64 bit version or if you can use the 32 bit. Unless something is running something pretty low level(like if it requires a driver) it should work on the emulation.

In addition to what MilesAhead said:

Please do not confuse 32-bit, 64-bit EXEcutable files with DATA files (images, music, archives, documents etc).
Executable programs(*.exe) and libraries(*.dll) can be 32 or 64 bit or other. But data is just data.
JPG will stay JPG, MP3 will stay MP3 in 64/32/16/whatever bit platform, Windows , Linux, MacOS, etc.

moving files 32 to 64

ok, makes sense. What i'm after is a faster computer to edit up my little bits of video. They all seem to be 64 bit. So i will keep my samsung 32 bit(2.27GHz) for general duties and have the speedier one for video editing. How do i move the files between the two computers.

Your 32-bit programs should run under Windows 7 64-bit.

Your personal data will be unchanged and can be opened under either operating system.


You'll have two programs folders if you go to the 64-bit version of Windows 7:

1. Program Files, which is the default container for any 64-bit programs.
2. Program Files (x86), which is the default container for any 32-bit programs.

Unless you are dual-booting with both versions or you are using a different computer for each version you cannot upgrade from Windows 32-bit to Windows 64-bit. It has to be a clean install.
