My question about is that how many GB of ram does each socket support because i currently have a 32bit with 3GB ram, thinking about making it a 64bit and adding more memory later on.
So how much does each dimm support? does anybody know?

"Maximum HP/Compaq approved memory is 4 GB*"
this is from the link above does it mean it only support 4GB max for even if its a 64bit??

More or less yeah. It means that HP had probably tested and concluded that 4GB is the safe maximum for that Motherboard.

If you want to improve your performance, your plan will buy you very, very little. I run 32bit with 3GB of RAM and my system is super fast - due to a SSD. If you really want to improve performance, get a small 40 to 60GB SSD for the OS (move user folders to the HDD). That would really make a difference. You are looking at around $100 upgrade cost (look for sales).

PS: I also have several 64bit systems with a lot of muscle - and they all have SSDs, but this 32bit is my favorite. You would not believe how much milage you get out of a modest system with a SSD.
