32bit programs randomly, and frequently crashing on x64

So I recently purchased a new ASUS laptop, and everything has been fine except for windows 7. In particular, 32 bit programs will inexplicably crash at random times, and when they do, they often all crash at the same time. For example, Steam, windows media player, uTorrent, and Firefox all crashed at the exact same time a few days ago, and several other simultaneous crashes have happened since. IE8, which has to run in 32bit mode for college related applications, crashes frequently as well, and has nearly compromised my work on several occasions.

I've tried recreating it, but I can't. The only thing they have in common is that they are all 32 bit programs, even things widows photo gallery(which is 32bit) crash randomly. I don't know what to do, and it's driving me nuts.

Dan,

Check your java - unless you specifically use a 64bit browser, you need the 32bit java.

Also there's been a rash of Flash updates recently - they "sandbox" their forever cookies - make sure it's up to date too. And while you're at it check your FF - the two orgs (Mozilla & Adbobe) worked together over the past few weeks to resolve the issue.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. I'm no crash dump reader, maybe someone else can assist you if you are able to provide details.

Java is 32 bit, and flash is up to date, so I don't see an issue there.

Anyway, steam and WMP just crashed simultaneously.

Besides installing the 32-bit programs you have named, and adjusting various Windows 7 x64 Professional user-interface settings, were there other changes to the ASUS laptop out-of-the-box?
