3TB usb drive wont initialise

just purchased a 3tb drive but am unable to get it to initialise!! both laptop and my system pick it up in bios but when l try to initialise using either GTP or MBR (obviously l tried GTP first due to its size) l get incorrect function error. l cant open up my system and sort it because it would be too problematic to do so due to having to spend ages undoing cable ties.

I could be wrong but I don't think you can have GTP drives over 2GB unless you have UEFI boot enabled. For sure I know you can't use an MBR partition on 2+GB drive without EFI.

from what lve read as long as its a secondary you dont need to, lm using it for storage.. in any case lve manage to get the drive to initialise, had to mess around with caddies.. l dont mind making 2 partitions to use in my original caddy if its a firmware issue but l still cant get it to see more than 746gb or there abouts.

finally managed to get the drive initialising, and eventually partitioned tho l had to use ubuntu, windows does find the partition.. but l cant see more than 746gb whatever l do.

For gigabyte boards, we have something called 3tb+ unlock, you could try searching for something similar to your motherboard since I see you have a Asus. Actually I found this doing a quick search http://event.asus.com/mb/2010/Disk_Unlocker/

doesnt work, it wouldnt pick it up, tho my motherboard supposedly does support 2tb drives according to the spec page.. lm assuming its related to the enclosure which brings the question of "which enclosure supports 3TB" hell ld be happy with a USB to SATA adapter.. doesnt have to be an enclosure just as long as l have the ability to back up to it once every few days.
