5.1 Surround Sound Problem

I have just hooked a Sony DVD Home Theater System (5 speakers + digital amplifier) to my onboard optical digital sound port on my computer. Using 'sound' through the control panel, I am able to test and hear the Realtek Digital Output in 5.1, using the encoded format of 'dolby digital'. However, when playing games (ex: Starcraft 2, Left 4 Dead), even though I have 5.1 set up on the game options menu, it plays only through front (right/left).

Does anyone have any suggestions for correcting this issue?

I've tried going through the 'sound' properties and had no success. I don't know if I mentioned before, but i'm using an optical digital connection; if that might help.
