50% CPU, where's the rest gone?

I'm having a weird issue with Realtek driver on my Vaio. It looks sometimes it just uses the 100% of one of the cores in my dual core CPU. I can only detect it when I feel the slowness. And then I sort by CPU utilization in the task manager. One of the processes take 50%. It's really annoying.. Any ideas?

Do you by any chance have zonealarm installed? What anti-virus software? Try disabling all third party apps one at a time to see if this is causing a problem. Also install the latest Realteck driver. Please update your system specs so we can be more helpful.

Hello and Welcome !

Download Process Explorer it's like a Super Task Manager it will allow up to expand a process and see which one is taking more Memory or CPU usage. Post us which one exactly is using the CPU.

Hope this helps,
Captain

Dude, you are talking to a group of experts ("experts" being them more than myself). Everyone here knows that what you just said is not true. I could spend an hour explaining everything that is wrong with that statement, but instead I will give an article to read. This article is about spyware, which I consider to be a particularly dangerous form of malware.

I think you have to know little bit more about what Viruses do.

Viruses are software programs, and they can do the same things as any other programs running on a computer. The actual effect of any particular virus depends on how it was programmed by the person who wrote the virus.

Some viruses are deliberately designed to damage files or otherwise interfere with your computer's operation, while others don't do anything but try to spread themselves around. But even the ones that just spread themselves are harmful, since they damage files and may cause other problems in the process of spreading.

Note that viruses can't do any damage to hardware: they won't melt down your CPU, burn out your hard drive, cause your monitor to explode, etc. Warnings about viruses that will physically destroy your computer are usually hoaxes, not legitimate virus warnings.

More: What can viruses do to computers?

We would strong recommend to install one so you wont regret in the future. There are lot of AV that has few low foot prints. For instance Microsoft Security Essentials is one that is highly recommend one around there. It free and effective.

Good Luck,
Captain

Some users have two virus scanners, which certainly impacts performance. But not to have any is plain suicide.

guys, ur really helpful. i appreciate it. u convinced me!
but i'm still not sure if it's caused by a virus. looks like Realtek driver. anyway, i'll let you know if i find anything.

I'm not a big antivirus fan myself. I run two, both of which I can shut down easily, Malware Bytes is one and Spyware Doctor is the other. Most of the time both are off because I need real-time performance for hard disk audio recording, eight to twelve 24-bit tracks at a time. I really can't have any background interference, you can't explain a missed take to a client.

I usually scan once a day. I think I've had two viruses in the past 25-30 years... I dealt with the Internet when it was pretty much text only. (Lynx) What a ride.

So, yes, download Malware bytes, it doesn't keep things running after you shut it down.

As for your CPU use... looking in task manager, is Audiodg using the cpu?

Regarding the CPU usage try the software i suggested. Process Explorer which i mentioned in my first response.

If the AV apps dont show a virus, and if other things dont seem to pan out sometimes on multi core processors an applicaation can use what is caklled affinity. that is it will only run on one core using up all of that cores cpu cycles (100%) but it will show in tast manager as 50% on a two core system.

If that is truely the case and you have identified the offending application you can first create a dmp from the process for us to examine (right click>create DMP file) and you can set the affinity for both processors. (see snip)

Basically some apps (poorly written ones) forget that they should be using both cores

I just did a search and found this page: http://technicallyeasy.net/2009/03/fix-audiodgexe-high-cpu-usage/

I've disabled all enhancements and waited for a while. Problem seems to be gone. But I need more time to confirm this..

That was going to be my suggestion and in fact why I asked if audiodg was using the cpu. The enhancements are DSP based and because of their nature are single threaded (one processor core). It's possible for DSP to use quite a bit of processor, especially with high sample rates.
Time will tell.

Might want to check Control Panel/Power Options --- select "Change Plan Settings" and then select "Change Advanced Power Settings"

Scroll down to "Processor Power Management"

Make sure both minimum and maximum are set to 100% when the computer running off the power adapter.
