Solved 50MB of Free space on 120GB SSD after Clean Install

Clean install on 120GB SSD results in 1GB of free space, causing all sorts of trouble. Any suggestions of what to check would be appreciated since installing it onto a Spinning disk only uses 70GB of space for some reason and I'm trying to track down the cause.

System is a Ryzen 5 3600 with 64GB so I'm still trying to figure out possible causes of the issue before I dive into a custom installation file

Have you run diskclean see if that clears space you need something like treeview to find were the files are

Did you check the Over Provisioning of your SSD?

Usually is set at 10%, it may be that yours is set at maximum %?

Just a guess but it could be something to do with your paging file. I only use 2gb of ram and my paging file matches it with 2gb of virtual memory. You are running a lot of memory with 64gb. If your paging file matches it with 64gb that might explain your loss of disk space. You should have at least 70gb free.

Paging file settings can be found at control panel, system, advanced, performance, settings, advanced, virtual memory.

I agree. Most of the space is for pagefile.sys (Virtual memory) and Hiberfil.sys (Hibernation)

As you have tons of memory you can set the virtual memory to disable.
If you don't use Hibernation you can save another 64G of disk space disabling hibernation.
Open a CMD window as administrator and type:
powercfg.exe /h off

Run disk cleanup or CCleaner or disk-cleanup-extended.

FastTurtle:

After I do a clean install of Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit and get it completely up to date and install my desired third party apps, there is a lot of used space in the 250 GB SSD.

Because my computer has 32 GB of RAM, and I choose to keep virtual memory set on system managed size, pagefile.sys is 31.9 GB.

Because I have no need for hibernation, hiberfil.sys does not exist.

I set both System Protection and Recycle Bin at 5%.

Of the 232 GB total space in my SSD, 81 GB is used space and 141 GB is free space.

I'm satisfied with that.

Megahertz07:

I see you use the powercfg.exe /h off command.

I use the powercfg -h off command.

Is there any difference in what those 2 commands do?

Big issue I'm facing is that there is so little space left over (thanks for the page file reminder) that the system isn't stable. If I can get into safe mode, I should be able to disable the page file and free up quite a bit of space and it could be the root cause for the instability right after the clean install. The damn page file is using more then the available free space, causing things to crash.

On the Disk Cleanup, hadn't thought about it - Good Idea as I'll have to see if it can clear enough to at least stabilize it long enough to disable the page file. I haven't used one in years as I do have all that lovely ram.

Thanks for the Page File Reminder as that was the issue. Disabled it and Windows has 35+GB of space available after most of my software has been installed.

/h or -h it works the same way.

If you call for help (powercfg.exe /?) it will say it is -h.

I agree with Megahertz07.
After you do a clean install of Windows 7 SP1, run Simplix Update Pack 20.11.11 (most current version).
It will run unattended and will restart your computer 3 - 4 times.
Windows 7 SP1 will then be up to date to November 2020.
After that's done, install the needed device drivers.
After that's done, run BypassESU-v9 and then choose the full installation option.
After that's done, load and run Windows Update and then select and install any needed recommended/important/optional updates.

I already have the updates I Consider to be critical installed due to grabbing them from the Catalog and yes MS has removed several of them or updated them with features that I don't care for - much of it being forcing to Win10 and Yes this system has a valid Win10 Pro key - You do know that MS is killing 10Pro. The only way to get the features will be Enterprise and an annual fee for it. SaaS is the way they are all going if they can

So I'll stick with my Win7 that is under my control
