64-Bit Windows 7 Question

Hey guys, so I recently topped out my computer ram to 2.5GB. I'm using windows 7 32-bit OS right now and it is running great. My computer has a 64-bit processor so I am able to get win 7 64-bit. My question is, since I only have 2.5GB of ram should I bother upgrading to windows 7 64-bit? Or just stick with the 32-bit edition?

Thanks guys :)

- with 2.50G RAM, you won't see any additional benefit in running a 64-bit operating system..
..it'll only make a real difference if you have more than, say 3.00G RAM..

..there is actually no disadvantage in not having that amount of RAM - 64-bit Windows7 will still run OK with 2.50G RAM

- it's just that if you do have more than 3G of RAM, a 32-bit operating system won't address all of it..
- but there's no harm in your staying with 32-bit Windows7, you're not missing out..

- only make the switch to 64-bit when you have loads of RAM, then you'll really see the benefit..

To see much of an improvement in WIN 7 64 you realistically need 4 GB Ram even more if running intensive video editing software. You have the max you can have in your current Win 7.

If the 32bit is running fine, then why mess with it. No real reason to go 64 bit unless you have 4 gigs of ram or more, although I'm sure it would run fine.

Yes, stick with 32-bit. 32-bit can address up to 4GB of memory total, but you lose a bit for video cards, etc. So, theoretically you get about 3.5GB. So, unless you have 4GB and need access to all 4GB, there is no great benefit to using 64-bit.

Yes running 64 bit on less than 4 GB is possible, like above posters have said you will not see a HUGE improvement but it will work like any other PC,

However if you have 64 bit running and want to upgrade your ram.(In the future) You could and then don't have to worry about re-installing Windows 7..

Hope this Helps...

You're not missing anything yet, there are still very few true 64 bit programs or applications.
I'm running Win. 7 64 with 8 gigs of ram and it only benefits me when doing heavy graphics editing or gaming and I do little of that these days.

Thanks, this forum is awesome. I'm totally loving my laptop again now (it is 3 years old). I was running XP Media Center and it was going really slow, so I did the upgrade to 7 and it completely deleted everything from my Hard Drive (which was good cause it's like a fresh start) and I just upgraded my ram from 1GB to 2.5GB so everything is running great. Also have a partition running Linux Ubuntu 9.10. Love it :) Thanks again guys

yes, there are benefits in running 64-bit, and if you intend to add even more RAM in the future it would be a good idea to switch over..

but, having said that, 32-bit Windows7 is still a very classy product..:geek:

Now I use 4 gb ram (ddr3) and has been install Acad 2007, Photoshop CS4 and Coreldraw 12. Should I upgrade my ram to execute those application smoothly? Actually i just try to execute those application with basic task i.e. 2d drawing and didn't try to 3d drawing, rendering and another advanced task yet.

Your CPU is too slow for advanced rendering - more RAM will not help if the CPU cannot work through the apps effectively and efficiently.

No more rootkits?

There’s more good news: the current rootkits that have been written for 32 bit systems, including the infamous Sony music CD rootkit, don’t work in the 64 bit OS. That’s because when updating the kernel code for the 64 bit version, Microsoft programmers took the opportunity to include a “patch guard” – code that is part of the kernel makes it impossible to install a patch in a running kernel (which kernel mode rootkits do on 32 bit systems).

Likewise, processor vendors had an opportunity, in making the new 64 bit processors, to include security mechanisms. Both AMD and Intel include code in their 64 bit products to prevent the exploitation of buffer overflow and buffer underrun conditions.

Will upgrading to 64 Bit Windows make you More Secure?

We expect that malware authors will continue to seek ways to fly under the radar, just as we will continue to evolve our protection technologies to stay one step ahead of the bad guys. Regardless, here are a couple tips to avoid getting hit by a rootkit:
Keep real-time protection enabled
while running up-to-date antimalware software is essential, it does little good if you turn off the real-time protection feature. If you lower your defenses and a rootkit does get through, finding and removing it can be a tricky endeavor. Keep your defenses up and you're much less likely to have headaches down the road.
Run 64-bit Windows
for the time being, it appears that currently, users running 64 bit Windows are less likely to be compromised by rootkits. While the threat landscape is constantly evolving, for now you can breathe a lot easier if you're running 64-bit Windows. If you have a choice, go with 64-bit.
