64-bit worked before System Recovery

Hello,

So I decided to do a system recovery on my laptop. I had Windows Ultimate x64 previously installed and everything worked. I did a system recovery and it took me back to vista. I think, "No problem. Let's go dig out your old 64-bit Windows 7 disc from storage and get this show on the road so I can get back to my oh so meaningful life."

I did a full system recovery, which I assume would be a "clean" install. I updated my monitor and display drivers and tried changing the resolution settings, but it only gives me the option for 16 and 32 bit true color options.

I just find it odd that it worked before and now it doesn't. I have a 64 bit processor, but I have no idea what is wrong. My Windows 7 tech support abilities also conveniently expired so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Side note: Tried re-installing iTunes. After downloading it told me I needed to download the 64 bit version. I'm sure it's some sort of update, but I even tried updating random devices that seemed relevant, but everything is up to date.

Is the display the only problem or will it not boot at all?

Try booting the installer to wipe the HD of all factory and possibly infected code before installing: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/91339-ssd-hdd-optimize-windows-reinstallation.html

The installer is mostly driver-complete, with newer arriving quickly via optional Windows Updates. Any drivers then missing in Device Manager can be found on the Support Downloads webpage for your model computer or device.

Install updates and then programs slowly over time to gauge performance after each. Don't let any programs write themselves into msconfig>Startup as they become freeloaders on your RAM/CPU and can spy on you. I only allow AV and gadgets. http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-debugging/70248-troubleshooting-msconfig.html

Use a lightweight free AV like MS Security Essentials which works perfectly with Windows 7 Firewall. http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

When it is finished, clean and order the HD perfectly using state-of-the-art free CCleaner then Auslogics Disk and Registry defraggers monthly. CCleaner - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com
Auslogics Disk Defrag - Reviews and free Auslogics Disk Defrag downloads at Download.com
Auslogics Registry Defrag - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

Then save a Win7 Backup image externally so you never have to reinstall again, just reimage the HD or replacement using DVD or Repair CD. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/663-backup-complete-computer-create-image-backup.html

Is the display the only problem or will it not boot at all?

Yeah Everything works fine. It just simply won't display in 64-bit color

To GregRocker: Thanks for that. I'll have to try that. I'm recalling this same problem the very first time I installed windows 7 on this laptop. I just can't remember what I did to fix it. I coulda swore it was simple updating some device. I even tried getting the nvidia download the display drivers from their site, but it said something about not being compatible with my current software - which I thought was weird cause I triple checked that I had the right one.

Check optional Updates for a newer Display driver, or the Support Downloads webpage for your computer model which you didn't fill in.

I rarely have a 64 bit install that goes as smoothly as 32 bit. There are always these issues which I find annoying since most the programs won't run in 64 bit anyway. Last time I installed 64 bit the only program actually running in 64 bit was Internet Explorer which couldn't even run flashplayer in 64 bit.

I spent days trying to get my friend in OKC computer working in 64 bit to benefit his heavy graphics and video programs. He finally said screw it and went back to 32 bit. But that was a year and half ago and since then many/most new computers are coming pre-installed with 64 bit, so i am going over there next week to try again to see if 64 bit will take hold this time for him.

*gregrocker: lol went to the Support/driver downloads section for my hp pavilion dv2000. put in the model. no option for windows 7 under the operating system option so I clicked on "I don't see my operating system." Pop-up stated that they have no software or driver downloads available.

What the heck is 64 bit color? There is no such thing on any of my systems and they are all 64 bit. It's 16 bit and 32 bit far as I know. This has been the case long as I can remember.

I can also tell you that the reason Vista installed is because there was a copy of it still sitting on your harddrive, using the recovery CD is the reason Vista was reinstalled. This is typical for any laptop because they would rather waste your harddrive space and have you do some lame recovery from the HDD rather than giving you the clean Vista CD to reinstall from.

The only problem with going to Win 7 is it may take some time to track down the correct drivers for your system but it's usually not too difficult and well worth the effort.

Try the Vista drivers for your model. But only if the Win7 installer or optional Windows Updates doesn't give you ones which work correctly.

OMG, no one realized yet...

What LeykisMinion meant was the color depth. LeykisMinion, there is no 64bit color depth. If you have it prior restoring, I can assure you 999999% that your memory is messing with you.

The highest color depth a monitor can display today is 40bit (10bit for each RGB channels, and 10bit for alpha channel). To have 40bit color depth, you need a compatible display adapter (read: expensive, Nvidia Quadro family supports 40bit output to display port ONLY, DVI will limits at 32bit) and a compatible monitor (read: super expensive, any of pro-class display from NEC or LaCie that costs $1200++) and you need to use display port as display connection (read: expensive display port cable).

In the end, there is no 64bit color depth in any consumer class display/display adapter today. Your memory is messing with you...

As for 64bit processor and 64bit Windows, that is another context to color depth. Color depth doesn't depend on your processor's instruction architecture nor your OS's kernel processor architecture compatibility (it doesn't have anything to do with the bit-ness of either processor/OS).

Rocker: Thanks for you time and effort. I don't know what happened, but now it's operating up to par. I think something automatically updated, but it's back to normal.

zzz: All I know is that the display went from one color setting to the next and wouldn't display how I wanted it to. Perhaps you can understand my, and everyone else's assumption that a 64-bit OS might also have a 64-bit color scheme - but thank you for the enlightening information. I feel like a better person with the knowledge you have bestowed upon myself, and all of these other selfless people that were just trying to help me out. Somehow I feel that the world is a better place with you in it. (man I wish there was a sarcasm font).

To everyone else trying to help: Thank you all for your hard work and taking the time out of your day to help an ignorant student of life.
