Hi all. I have a 64gb flash pen which I have recently bought, when I put files or images into the drive inside a folder the files or images within in the folder disappear after I have taken the drive out if my pic and re-inserted it.

When I insert the files or images without a folder everything is fine. Has anybody got any ideas what the problem is please?

I've got a dell Inspiron PC that's on windows vista home premium.

Did you check that the files were there and you were able to open those immediately after copying those into the folder?

try this again, this time use an elevated command prompt (right click, select run as admininstrator)

assuming E:\ is your flash drive
cd E:\
dir /a /s > %userprofile%\Downloads\Dir64gbFlash.txt

Then post the output of Dir64gbFlash.txt.

Thanks,

Hi jumanji, yes the files were in the folder but when I remove the flash pen and re insert it the files have disappeared.

How are you removing the flash drive? Are you just disconnecting it or are you using "safely remove"?

This is an odd issue. I'll wait until you post the contents of the drive before offering anything else.

It might be interesting to see the contents in both states (before you remove the flash drive and then after reconnecting). If you provide both, you'll have to name the redirected output to differnt filenames
dir /a /s > %userprofile%\Downloads\Dir64gbFlash-A.txt
dir /a /s > %userprofile%\Downloads\Dir64gbFlash-B.txt

The files may be in the Write Cache (memory) and not physically written to the drive yet. If the option is set to Performance and you don't use Safely Remove Hardware (SRH), the files will be lost by just pulling the drive. Check the properties for the drive in Hardware Manager and see how it's set. The Performance option is good for small files but you MUST use SRH before removing the drive.

If the PC is shutdown with the drive in place, Windows will automatically flush the write cache and the drive can be removed after the PC is off. It's best to get into the habit of SRH for all USB drives though.

How can I tell if the GB is fake? It says in the properties that its capacity is 62.4GB.

ok, that's good practice.

See post# 5: I wanted to know if you can see the files using a directory command in a command prompt.

I'm a little confused as to the issue you're trying to solve. I thought that it pertained to files in a folder, but in post# 13 you mention putting them in a document.

Hi, I remove in safemode.

I don't know what you're talking about in the last part of your email sorry.

:note: Flash drives larger than 4GB are very slow, so there might be more latency in writing the files.

How can I tell if the GB is fake? It says in the properties that its capacity is 62.4GB.

I would try this tool: Bart's Stuff Test 5

it is a windows xp tool though so not sure if it will run in win7

This will read/write to the drive to fill it to capacity and report back when it reaches a limit. if it is fake and has an actual capacity of say 4GB then it won't write past that. the fakes trick windows and other programs into looking like it is a higher capacity. It can even register as a name brand even if it isn't.

I would also heed Slartybarts suggestions. when you write to a flash drive, even if windows says it is finished, it is not necessarily finished. it has the remaining data being written and if ejected improperly, will not finish sending the data.

can you copy small files that should take less than a few seconds to the drive and then see if they don't show up when ejected and re-inserted?

Still confused on the folder issue with copying them within a folder. maybe windows is just copying the folder location, but not copying the actual files even though they appear to be in there on the flash drive. does this happen on other flash drives as well or just this 64GB drive?

I'm not clear on the problem. In the OP's original statement, he says files written to the USB drive disappear. The OP now says the files aren't written to the USB drive when included in a doc file. If this is MS Office Word, the files will be included in the doc file itself unless the "by reference" is selected. The size of doc file includes the file(s) and won't be shown individually.

I would like a more detailed explanation of the problem and during what operations.

Testing for the fake drive on a 64 GB drive is gonna take quite some time.

So far there is no indication that such a test is required.

If a file was copied and lost because the real capacity of the drive was less than what was advertised, then it would be lost no matter where it was copied, inside or out.

So go ahead with whatever easy things Slartybart wants you to perform to diagnose the problem.

I am stepping aside and will only watch.:)
