Wonder if there are any statistics comparing the migration from 98/ME/2000 to XP. As I recall, XP had some serious issues during its first year of release that weren't corrected until SP1 came out.

Give it time and eventually that old XP will keel over...

I'd like to see a breakdown of homeusers vs business users as I believe that the percentage of home users sticking to XP is probably lower whereas a lot of business's are hanging onto there old XP setups.

Wow, seems to be a lot of XP hate going on here. I for one am glad they are still supporting it. I'm on a fixed income and can't afford to upgrade every PC I own to the latest and greatest OS when they come out. It took me a long time to acquire them and I'd like to get the most use out of them as I realistically can. They wouldn't run windows 7 even if I could afford it. You could argue that XP isn't as secure as Vista or windows 7 and thus should be shelved, but keep in mind that a large majority of that 66% will likely keep on trucking with XP patched or not. Do you really want that? I don't. Eventually that old hardware will die and people will have to buy new. New system with new OS. XP will eventually just fad into the sunset, I don't see the need to take it out behind the shed and shoot it though. Just my 2 cents, not meant to offend anybody so if I did my apologies. :D

I do agree alphanumeric,

XP will just slowly fade away, (It's doing that right now)

It just takes time for people to move to newer technologies, not everyone drops it and moves on to the latest and greatest ;)

The economy has had a huge impact also.

When your unemployed a Win7 upgrade or a new PC/laptop takes a back seat to the rent/housepayment/food.

Many people that are working are holding on to their money just in case they lose their job.

Don't think it's a hate issue and you raise a very good point. Not everyone has the need or finances to upgrade. I still use my XP Pro laptop with IE8/Firefox, Security Essentials, Malwarebytes, etc and it's secure. I backup and image regularly. Besides, 7 will be about 5 years old (from when it was released to the public on 10/22/09) when support for XP ends in 2014. By then who knows what version of Windows will be available and what kinds of computers we'll need to run it. ;)

I have to admit, this is the first time, since Windows 3.0, that I've bought a new WinOS before a major SP/update. I bought Win95 in 1997. I bought Win98 in 1999. I bought XP in 2002. I never bought WinVista.

On the business side of things, I STILL make that recommendation, although I HAVE been a little lenient with Win7. It just plain works.

I'd be willing to bet that most of the folks still using XP are there for reasons that have nothing to do with how comfy they are with it. More likely, they haven't stumbled on the reason they need to move to Seven. Or, they just can't afford to move to Seven, considering that most XP machines won't do Seven without some major tweaking, so updating requires $$ for a new machine as well. Not everyone is as geeky as us. LOL

This is probably the longest I've ever had a Windows machine run without having to restore it to scratch. I'm used to restoring to "factory" about every 2 yrs. I've run with Win7 since new in 2009 and only recently (Nov, '14) restored to clean up the machine from all my 'xperimenting. LOL!! I may never need another machine.

Upgraded to 10 when it was still free, then installed 2017 update.

I have a mix of both, my new bare bones PC I got last Christmas has 7 home premium on it, and the netbook my daughter got has 7 starter on it. The other two old AMD Athlon beaters are running XP. My Daughter uses one of the XP PCs daily. The other one hardly gets used, it's more of a spare now in case her desktop PC dies.

I have all my pc's & Mac running Win7. Have since the beta day one. Save the mac. As for the $ issue of upgrading vs staying with XP for me it would be far costlier re production rate & security risks to run XP than to not have upgraded to 7. Have to think big picture even when our economy is mandating that we cannot.
Just an opinion. I've been finacially challenged along with the best of them.:( I truly believe one must keep moving forward if there is ANY way possiblele. What you save this week could cost you next month.
Peace & regards,
J23

I still use XP..... sort of. I use my personal laptop at work and while the main app we have will run on Win7 x32, it runs like crap. Its much more efficient on an XP machine. This app won't run at all on my x64 system.

I didn't want to set up a dual boot system, so I tried the next best thing... Windows XP Mode. The app runs great in a virtual environment, so I will stick with this until the vendor releases the next version that is supposed to have Win7 support.

Moral to all this? Some of us have no choice but to continue using XP. And its not like XP is a bad OS (like Vista), its just getting a little aged.
