7 Blinking Screen

Well, I think we might have a new one, I looked back a few pages in the whole list of topics.

My wife's computer is using a fresh install of Windows 7 build 7000.
This problem seems to happen randomly and we cant find a rhyme or reason to it. At first I thought it might be a heat issue, perhaps with the video card. Well about 4 months back(the blinking problem was not present at this time), I found her video card's fan had stopped working and we replaced the card with a new nVidia 9600GT.
The blinking started maybe a week or two ago.
Rebooting the computer does not help in most cases.
Placing my monitor on her computer was inconclusive. It did not blink.
Placing her monitor on my computer was also inconclusive. It did not blink.
Right now she is using a driver that is dated 4/2/2009. We are currently downloading the driver for 4/30/2009 hoping this will help, and once it is downloaded and installed, I will write back on my findings. Maybe we should update to the latest build of 7?

If I'm in the wrong forum, or location or if I missed a post regarding this same issue, please let me know so we can get this figured out on our end.

I wonder if your PSU is powerful enough to power the 9600 GT. I was going to buy one and went with a 9500 GT because it said (on the box) that it required less power. I have a 300 watt PSU. This is probably driver related but this is another idea maybe you haven't thought of. Good luck.

I highly recommend that you do a fresh install of the build 7100 which is out now in torrents and will be mainstream from Microsoft on the 5th.

There are too many bug fixes to mention but suffice to say that your problem will be solved with the RC build.

She's got a 550W PSU and I have the same Video card, however not using Windows 7. I will have access to the new build may 5th and if we have to, we will go down that road.

--Right now trying out the new driver from nVidia and so far so good, will give a approximated time when the blinking starts again, if at all!

Hi Mystikal Frank and welcome to this forum, hope you enjoy your stay.

The public RC will be released May 5th and yes it would be wise to go with it, lot of updates, more drivers built in, more stable, and better performance.

Now for your prob, as stated above PSU possible, more likely a heat prob. Make sure there are no dust bunnies, lint, fans not clogged with dust, vid card has nothing under it blocking air flow. Just a few things to check that should be REGULAR maintence. Hope this was helpful, if so let us know.

Thanks 1Bowtie, everything looks very nice and tidey in the computer. The driver did the trick, no blinking for at least 25 minutes.

Would an upgrade from the current build be wise, or would you still recommend a fresh install of the new build?

I think just about everybody here really recommends fresh install.

If your windows 7 is blinking, or flashing there is no need to install fresh windows just do what i told you.
Your error will be fixed
To solve the screen flashing and not responding error in windows 7, go to start, type regedit in the search line and press Enter. Once the registry editor is opened, find these registry keys and delete them.

• HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop\HungAppTimeOut
• HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop\WaitToKillAppTimeOut
• HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\HungAppTimeOut
• HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WaitToKillAppTimeOut
• HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WaitToKillServiceTimeOut

Once all these keys are deleted, Screen flashing will be solved in your computer.
