7 logs me off after short idle (not sleep, logoff)

Windows 7 logs me off, shuts down my programs, and shows me the logon screen after I have been away from the machine for a short time. All posts I can find on this subject address SLEEPING after an idle period. This is not sleeping, but an actual logoff.

This means that one cannot leave a program running unless you are actively at the keyboard, which makes an otherwise excellent operating system unusable for my purposes.

Hello Coatespt,

Welcome to Seven Forums.

My first thought is to check and see if you have 'On resume, display logon screen' for your screen saver.

Hope this helps.

Gratified by your quick response. Thanks, but I formerly was not using a screen saver and had the problem anyway. I've set the power settings to never sleep under any circumstances when I'm plugged in (even though sleep is not the problem AFAIK) I turned on the screensaver on in order to be able to see that checbox and it is unset. The problem remains.

I've seen this recommendation frequently in my researches. It seems odd to link screensaver behavior and auto-logoff. Isn't the POINT of a screensaver that your machine is active even though you are not? I have set the screensaver time to 9999 minutes but I won't be able to tell if this solves the problem until I can be idle for a while.
