fibble

we could use info on your current setup. did install complete or crash during install. where does it crash before or after the starting windows screen.

99% of failed installs are from bad dvd's

Where did you download yours, and how did you burn it? waht app did you use to burn it to dvd?

W7 seems to be having a lot of issues with older storage drivers. I'd make that #1. See if you can get updated storage drivers for that motherboard. If it were an intel ship set then there are definately new storage drivers that have to be installed.

You can also try going to the hardware manager and to each sata adapter channel and turn off Native Command Queing on each that has a drive attached and see if that helps.

um not all but enough. I was looking for storage to see if you had a raid, and to find out if the install completed or crashed during it

Welcome back Fibble, how was your party?:D
If I remember you were having issues with multiple drives attached, both SATA and IDE?
As I'm reading I suggested to remove the IDE and go with 1 SATA drive and I'm assuming you have done this?
As in regards to the choice of X86 or 64 thats entirely your choice.
There have been issues with the ISO image, apparently if the image is burnt to fast it tends to corrupt during install. I would suggest downloading RC1 or whichever version you prefer and using ISO Burn use the slowest burn speed at the beginning, do this on a 32 bit machine if possible.

Regards,
Adrian

Flibble, try the x86 version to see if it eliminates the problem. I had the same issue with a AMD x64 4200+, it will simply not run the x64 version, although it is a 64bit processor and it runs other 64bit OS's. Yours being a previous model, it might be the same issue. I had to replace the CPU, but just because I was stubborn to get 64 bit running.

I had the same issue whith installing Vista Ultimate on a WD Sata HD. The problem simply was the HD. It was rather by mistake that I used another HD after a while of fruitless attempts to fix the prob.
BTW: the very same HD (the "faulty" one) gave me a SMART warning not very long time after that (mounted in another rig) and passed away during the same boot.

It's only a guess but maybe you wish to try another disc.

Cheers

Fibble, try clearing the cmos and setting the bios to defaults, after that reenable your SATA drives and other important settings to how they were. If you havn't tried this yet it's worth a try because it has worked for me on two other machines so far.

Official Response from Asus

I have been installing Windows 7 on quite a few prototype and legacy boards and virtually every time I have seen issues getting Windows 7 to boot properly, it turns out to be a bios/driver issue. At my house I have two "older" machines running the ASUS A8R32-MVP Deluxe, with an AMD X2 4800+ and 2GB ram. Both have the same issue of installing Windows 7 and then freezing on the boot.

I opened a case on this issue with ASUS Tech support and here is their response as of 9/14/2009:

"Dear Valued Customer,

At this time there is no driver support for Windows 7 on this motherboard. Please check back after the official release of windows 7 and we may have drivers available then, but unfortunately we cannot guarantee that this model will gain Windows7 support."

Having assumed this board was having bios/driver issues, and it was old enough that ASUS was not going to support it, I have moved on and replaced these two older machines with systems built around Core I7 processors, which are all running fantastic on Windows 7.

I am not quite sure if it is too late to answer your question. In my case the AHCI-mode was the problem. Windows 7 needes a driver to use the a8r32-mvp deluxe in ahci-configuration.
You could use the windows vista driver version 1.0.5.8 for the uli chipset. You can find this one on the nvidia home page (nvidia bought Ali some years ago). The package is called integrated2.20. Use a zipper like 7-zip to unpack the exe and use the included sata driver. Use it during the installation when windows is asking for the target hard drive. Helped in my case.
As an alternative you could set the sata drives to ide mode. Worked for me as well.
