7100 SQL Server 2005 Problem

Before I start, dont even freaking say clean install, I dont care, stop wasting time by even thinking of saying it. Plenty of people have absolutely no problems with upgrading - ill clean install after I buy it - Windows Vista/7 has greatly improved upon upgrading technique and usually will be no problems - ms just says to do it to be safe.

I'm trying to upgrade to 7100 from 7068, however its saying I have SQL Server 2005 Installed and I need to uninstall it first..

Problem is, I dont! I had SQL Server 2008 stuff yes, and I removed everything about it and still saying it.

Theres a possibility I had it before and uninstalled it... Not sure, but anyways somethings been left over or so.

Anyone else get around this issue, know what registry key(s)/files I need to delete to make it stop thinking I have it installed?

Hi there
Any old .NET or Visual studio 2005 stuff lying around. Maybe soem application that is using this type of DB internally -- "Audio / Video streaming programs", TV / AUDIO / VIDEO libraries / applications. other multi-media etc.

I use "Squeezecenter" for audio streaming -- I never realized it but this has it's own internal MySQL client embedded in it. Wasn't a problem upgrading however.

I know you said don't even THINK of the unmentionable so just go through ALL your apps that might even have a "sliver" of server in it.

I think that installs the 2005 SQL by default..

Maybe I'm being dumb here but why on Earth would Office 2007 install 2005 SQL -- maybe it does - but that's news to me --. Office 2007 has got its own database -- Access 2007 in it.

I've got Office Enterprise 2007 and never had this problem on the upgrade.

Office 2007 has an addin to outlook for some sort of contact manager. That uses the desktop SQL engine. If you are not careful the default install of Office will install this.. Not all Office versions have access included.

I have been wrong before, and I am working from memory. So all I was doing is adding a suggestion for his issue..

i believe that the office answer may be onto something possibly. Office is quirky for alot of stuff... example, try installing office 07 first, then (if you have it or care to try) Call of duty 2, in that order. source: call of duty office error - Google Search

BUT...

I'm gonna say it.... CLEAN INSTALL... FFS.... the world is full of lazy people nowadays.... why wold you test and have an opinion on something that you may spend money on that would be as chewed up and quirked over with having multiple OS's. Yes, i say multiple since they are ALL different versions from different developer groups working on them... do you think they pass these around and then JUST ONLY UPGRADE their test machines or VM's? They may do an upgrade, but just to see if it works, for all the lazy upgrade people. Do you think you are going to get a true "reading"....

it would be kinda like wiring your house with ethernet, some of your house is on cat-5, some cat-6 and 6e... then you wonder why you have transfer issues and network problems thru the network while connected on gigabit nic and router, lets say.

Its not like you are copying your favorite folder to another location and overwriting all the exisiting files and saving new ones... its not exactly like that... in theory, yes, reality, no.... Even THIS part of 7 is in its TESTING stage of the upgrade process ... which is a flat waste of time IMO...

there is a reason why there is an app called EASY TRANSFER.... No real smart person is going to use 7 as a full time production primary OS as of right now, not yet, this is the reason of a beta, to test... not fully configure and sit back....

now with the RC, yea, you can probably configure and sit back for awhile, atleast till RTM, but still... cant go full throttle just yet, its not a PRODUCTION OS... i think one would be silly to set anything important up on a rig with 7 with no alternative solution/choice... you are tying up your own hands by doing this. You may jump off the bridge, doesnt mean i have to follow you down. You speak to any reputable tech, whether it be on this forum, any forum, or anywhere in the world, and they will tell you the same. Else, end up having funky issues that are basically unexplainable ( the subject of your thread), except to the developer group of probably the 68 build... maybe someone with some in-depth SQL background, possibly.

Also plenty of ppl also have problems after an upgrade... care to scour the forums here for a bit? just try out the networking subforum, or driver subforum. All cases are independant of eachother. Your setup is not identical to anyone on here, possibly hardware, but even that is a small straw to find. Different chipsets, used with a compilation of old/newer/beta drivers and so on .

Beta testing an OS is alot different that beta testing the lastest beta of a video game... most only have a beta that you can test before the retail version comes out. If there was (an "RC"), and the beta version was a little wacky, would you continue to install a 2nd version of the "game" OVER the TOP of the buggy beta build of the "game"? Then come to the conclusion, "well, this game is crap". Not exactly how the process is intended.

Well I found out there was 2 messages mingled together. One wanted me to reboot before upgrading and another saying 2005 wasnt compatible.

Rebooting then doing it again let me upgrade but still complained that 2005 might not work. But as i said its not on my programs list or anything, must just be a left over registry key.

all is well now, sorry i went to sleep after it started upgrading so couldnt come reply to thread

Digger, the BEST beta testing happens when people use the OS like its a main OS, FULLY! I have a full working enviroment set up for developing software. It would be really annoying to reset all of this up again every time i updated a build - im not an ordinary user with basic software that can be reinstalled within an hour.

Upgrade is the best approach for me

Digger, the BEST beta testing happens when people use the OS like its a main OS, FULLY! I have a full working enviroment set up for developing software. It would be really annoying to reset all of this up again every time i updated a build - im not an ordinary user with basic software that can be reinstalled within an hour.

well, i say its kinda foolish (depending on type of software, but still) to be have a "software developing environment" setup on a beta OS. If you are designing software for 7 per say, how to know something wouldnt be changed from build to build, beta to RC, RC to RC#, then RC# to RTM? Only now would i think most developers would now seriously think about developing software 7 geared, i may be wrong in some cases, not my department. Like i said tho, your environment "creation" has you hamstringed. For flexibility you may want to reconsider some angles of your setup/environment. May want to have 2 partitons of the same OS install per say. I myself dont like to paint myself into a corner, at any time.

Yes i dread the re-do/reinstall of the whole network here. But whats gotta be done, has gotta be done, and done right, the first time. Or suffer.

Well it was actually a few very minor problems that i dont see having any reason to break from another win7 version lol. But im hooked on win7 now and want to use it as primary OS but i still need to keep working on our software, and our software is for the game I play so i need to play and work at same time ;P
