7201 - Those running it, what's new?

Burning 7201 x64 to DVD now..

I'm gonna run some HDD, GPU and system benchmarks on 7127 before I get rid of it to compare what the real difference is between the two. :D

I'd be very interested if you posted your comparison.
7127 was great I thought and it felt "snappier" than this (as they say) to me.

cheers,j:)

PS A very warm welcome to 7 forum.

Too bad you can only take that lightly. Problem is that is only for that system, and as far as i saw half the 64bit tests didn't work. Another thing is that all those games were programmed for xp, so once things switch to windows 7 it should be a lot better.

I've updated 2 PCs (both via Upgrade, rather than fresh installs) so far, and they've both worked flawlessly after. I'd like to note that one of the PCs was a netbook, and my WEI score actually went up by .5 (from 1.7 to 2.2, thanks to a CPU bump). Additionally, netbook got the x86 treatment, while the other PC got x64.

I'll be upgrading at least 2 more machines soon.

Wow, it's a shame that the frame rates in Far Cry 2 are worse in Windows 7 than in Vista.
Win7 x64 boot times are better than Windows XP though, that's cool.

Interesting that you bring this up. I've been playing Far Cry 2 again lately, and smoothness of frames was no issue at all for me. Dunno why they were getting crap for frames, but I game in 2560x1600, and I was sitting somewhere in the "smooth as a baby's butt" range.

ok, so after all that being read, lol....

can ANYONE that has done a clean install, meaning a format of the drive, install of 7201, and THEN installed ALL of your settings, drivers, programs, shared folders, indexed everything, indexed WMP library, installed games, office, photoshop, etc, etc. In other words, my current install with everthing loaded is around 75gb on a 250 (232gb) partition/drive, plenty free, yet a decent load.

then tell me what the "visual speed" difference may be. In other words, in about two days after install you should have by then thought of most everything that you usually install and settings made. I just state this since of course the OS is going to seem faster on a clean (formatted disk) install at first, always does to me for the most part. Only after usage, temp files, installed/uninstalled/reinstalled programs and/or drivers and so on. Same goes for services.

Orbital i am really curious as to what was the big diff with the size in 7127. my first thinking was maybe something like branch cache was left out or something along the lines of a feature like so. Couldnt have been that much of sloppy code that got cleaned up. Something being tested in 7127 possibly? Thats the other way to go with it, looks more like the answer rather than taking something out.

Verrrdy interrresssting....

Digger, clean install of 7201. Almost two days later, I've been hammering it pretty non-stop, with general use, gaming, installs, settings, etc. To be honest, it's a little difficult to gauge weather it's slower by simple fact that my main system is grossly over-powered. So yeah, it better be responsive.

It's as expected; very smooth and problem-free. In fact, I used another system as a guinea pig, installing all kinds of malware and nonsense on it, it's still running smooth. I through a few viruses at it too, for good measure. My main rig is running very well, I'm thrilled at how well it performs.

I now have it on my main rig, the HTPC, an XPS M1710, and a Mini 9. All required minor driver searches, but overall, clean experiences.

With the variance I have in machines, I should be able to get a good line on how well it performs overall. I have to say, though..the mini 9 (2GB RAM, 32GB SSD) runs amazingly well.

i read this in an NFO...

Microsoft Windows 7 7201 Change log:
1. You can now add anything to the Taskbar.
2. Icons slightly expand when you hover over them on the taskbar.
3. The System menu is more simplistic, and easier to navigate.
4. You can change the login screen picture through the Personalization menu.
5. The menu/lists that pop up when you right click on things now have the Aero Glass effect.
6. The default icons for Folders have changed to be the transparent blue ones featured a long time ago.
7. The Minimize/Maximize/Exit buttons on the top-right of a window have changed icons, and are a bit smaller than the Vista/7 counterparts.
8. There’s an “Upload” feature for Pictures, files, and videos. If you right-click a file, and click Upload, you can make it automatically upload to a website of your choice. After uploading, a pop-up will appear saying it’s done, and clicking OK will cause the link/download link to the file to appear in the popup box.
9. Spanish, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese unicode(s) and settings are integrated, so one can run foreign apps or use foreign keyboards without changing languages & restarting.
10. Bug fixes and more stability

Digger i have done exactly that. fresh install, loaded office 2007, nod32, phone software etc. it boots quicker than any other build, programs load straight away, shuts down quickly and it feels smoother. i'm very impressed. so much so that i've just invested in new ram & hdd to revive an old pc on which i will install the latest build
