Earlier today I downloaded the RTM from one of the torrent sites. It is now up and running.

The installation took about ten and a half minutes from beginning to up and running. AT the present there is no application installed that I can use to show the Version Window (winver). Albeit, here is what is presented in the the window:

Micrsoft Windows
Version 6.1 (Build 7600)

At present there is no Expiration Date because I do not have a key code for this build (haven't tried any of the RC keys, don't think they will work).

The bottom right of the screen does not have the build number on the screen as do the RC builds.

Loaded Microsoft Security Essentials and no virus were detected/found, so it would appear no nasties were downloaded with this built.

The following is the built that was downloaded:

7600.16384.090710-1945_x64fre_client_en-us_Retail_Ultimate-GRMCULXFRER_EN_DVD

Thus far no problems. :D

For you none believers:

That has got to be one of the dumbest things I have heard. If there was a secret backdoor, trojan or other malware in this torrented release, do you honestly think that it's so well known already that the security tools would be able to detect it????

Sorry, but there isn't any way that I would download an OS like this from a torrent site and take chances with my computer, my privacy, my data or my home network.

Not that we need to see it but the snipping tool will let capture the picture and paint will let you save it.

As long as the hashes match up properly, there should not be any malware.

I did a complete scan on my hard drive after installing 7600 (1384) and ESET AV (Nod32) found zero threats. Plus I use key scrambling software. Hash match plus keyscrambling software and clean scan is good enough for me

Ok first lets keep it subtle here and peacefull...no flaming posts...

Yes because obviously somebody distributing software via a torrent site would never publish a hash that was computed after the malware was already there. Unless you get the hash direct from Microsoft...how do you have any idea whatsoever that it's legit????

All you are certain of with a random published hash is that you downloaded it exactly as it was meant to be downloaded.

Ok first lets keep it subtle here and peacefull...no flaming posts...
Sorry, not trying to flame anybody....but sometimes being subtle with something like this doesn't get the point across.

Second there is a such thing as virtualization and you can sniff your internet connection to make sure that all traffic is okay...really there are ways to keep your safety AND try the latest and greatest
But I highly doubt that most of the people are going to these lengths with these releases. I'm sure they just go ahead and load it and have no idea what might actually be happening behind the scenes. I just don't think it's wise to screw around with torrent operating systems....it's a huge risk.

Really??? Then you're in the wrong forum ...

I guess you never go hiking, as you can slip and break a leg, or swimming either 'cause you could drown ... you must be very smart and clever, and also quite rude. If you disagree there's no need to call somebody dumb. It might end up with you being the dumb one.

There are ways to insure you download a safe leak, rule #1 being read the threads on the leaks and what people are downloading, checking the hashes on what you downloaded, etc.

I'm not saying you should be reckless, but you can be adventurous and take precautions, like having up-to-date backups you can restore from in case of a misdaventure :D. It's more fun than a PS3 ...

Seriously I use torrents from time to time. I often get new releases of Linux distros...but with those at least you can compare the hashes directly against what the distributer is publishing.

I've been a systems admin/engineer for software companies for my entire career. So software piracy isn't something that I'm particular fond of. I think it's just fine and dandy to be a windows fan and use a windows based OS...but if people think it's so great...why not just pay for it? And with MS freely releasing the RC builds, I just don't understand the fury to try to get your hands on every single build to "see what has changed".

Oh well to each their own. My recommendation though is that it's just too darn easy to be taken advantage of and risking personal information and your data may just not be worth the sneak peak of that release masquerading as an RTM.

pparks1,

I really don't care what you think. Since I have installed Win 7 RTM and up to this writing I have upgrade MSE, and still no problems detected.

Now I will go back and see if I can get you disbelievers a copy of the winver.

Here it is again for those of you who seem to think I am either stupid or just another idiot. :D

Just a suggestion, use "questionable" rather than "dumb" next time, and ask if they did due diligence. Warning about perils is excellent and welcome. All is forgiven :D.

I do like the fact that the "system image" utility is baked into Windows 7. I've used that quite a number of times now with some testing that I was doing with regards to a hard drive that wasn't working with my motherboard and it saved me a ton of time. I'm also planning to use once I get my box built and activated with Win7...so I don't have to go through the upgrade process a number of times.

This post is pretty funny, seeing how RTM ISN'T EVEN OUT YET!

It's actually great for a freebee. The only thing I don't like about it is you can only rebuild exactly the same disk structure you saved, IOW I can't restore the system image to a different partition, like in another disk. But for its intended purpose of disaster recovery it's very nice.

I think you may need to resort to the questionable activation hack, or else do the rearming thing to get 120 days, plenty until the actual release.

Cheers!
