hi all

I have 8 processors and they all show up in the Device Manager. Under Windows XP all 8 of these were utilised, but I recently went over to Windows 7 and it only uses 4.

How can I resolve this problem?

thks a lot

Maybe I have two of them?

Not sure about the tech details - 8 of them show up under "processors" in Device Manager, and under Windows XP when I ran task manager, under "performances" you could see all 8 working. Now it's only 4.

Its related to a software limitation to the os much like early versions of Xp being able to utilize 4+ gb or ram and no be x64. And Win7 Starter not being able to use more than 2Gb or ram.

I use W7 Home Prem, I have a 4 core i7 processor and I see 8 processors running in nearly ALL my processor monitors. Each core has two processors. That is the way I understood it would work BEFORE I bought the system. Is Wiki wrong, this time?

This is probably the longest I've ever had a Windows machine run without having to restore it to scratch. I'm used to restoring to "factory" about every 2 yrs. I've run with Win7 since new in 2009 and only recently (Nov, '14) restored to clean up the machine from all my 'xperimenting. LOL!! I may never need another machine.

Upgraded to 10 when it was still free, then installed 2017 update.

You have a single physical processor with 4 logical cores and hyper threading enabled thus showing you 8 total CPU's.

In the case of this user, he has 2 physical CPU's with 4 logical cores on each one. Windows Home Premium is limited to 1 physical CPU socket...thus only 1 of his CPU's can be used.

You will need to move to Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate.

Sorry, I'm a little confused the OP's answer here....

Maybe I have two of them?

Not sure about the tech details - 8 of them show up under "processors" in Device Manager, and under Windows XP when I ran task manager, under "performances" you could see all 8 working. Now it's only 4.

Is the OP asking the question, or giving the answer???

I "assume" the OP has two based on the other info given, but...

Just my way of thinking :)

he just needed to go a little further with what the OP said about all 8 cores showing up and active in XP. Don't forget that XP Pro supported up to 2 sockets as well (and was a never ending source of confusion and debate with regards to XP Home when dual cores started coming out, which Home supported no problem).
