I've followed all of the online Microsoft recommendations and nothing seems to have fixed the issue - the hot fx tools seemed to fix something but once ran again they fixed something different? Been having the problems since getting the computer in October 2012. No issues with SURT installed normally so i'm at a loss. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Sarah and welcome to the forums

Your CheckSUR log is showing a few missing files from your computer, so lets fix those and see where it leaves us.

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

Please download the following file, packs.zip, and extract this to the root folder of your primary drive (usually C:\) so that the folders have the structure: C:\Packs\Windows... etc.

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/16537616/Packs.zip

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    robocopy C:\Packs C:\ /E /IS
  4. Then re-run the SURT and post the CheckSUR.persist.log please:

    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

Edit: I have asked a staff member to remove your .docx attachment as one of the screenshots has your gmail address in the tab name. If you hate spam as much as I do, it's best not to post it online!

I've become stuck on the command prompt part. It's continually saying access is denied on 1 file and retrying and won't proceed any further. I've attached a screen print of the error.

Hi Sarah,

No problem, I should have anticipated that. 0x5 is a permissions problem, so this will have to be done outside of Windows. Do you have a Windows 7 DVD? If not, I would like you to create a System Repair Disc:

System Repair Disc - Create

You will now need to boot into your disc. After selecting the language, click Repair Computer then click Command Prompt. In this Command Prompt window, type out the following command, double checking it for typos before pressing enter:

robocopy C:\Packs C:\ /E /IS

Then reboot your computer, run the SURT again please and upload the CheckSUR.persist.log :)

Tom

Interesting - I had an identical error set the other day.
I wonder if the problem arises from some kind of misguided cleanup tool used to free disk space?

Strangely, that didn't replace any of the files. Could you try this instead please:

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.

    https://dl.dropbox.com/u/16537616/SFCFix.zip
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, two files should be created on your Desktop: SFC.txt and Trace.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl + C) and Paste (Ctrl + V} the contents of these files into your next post for me to analyse please - put

tags around each log to break up the text
.

Yeah I did wonder whether it was caused by some form of disk cleaning tool because it's removed just about every useless file from WinSxS. I'll keep an eye out for more and we might see a pattern emerging.

Hi Sarah,

Ran as directed however no file called Trace.txt was created? Below is the SFC.txt results

My apologies for the confusion. I had forgotten to edit my post template to remove that as it isn't relevant here.

SFCFix has done quite a lot of work which is great but it did fail to copy a few of the files so I would like you to run another sfc /scannow command and upload your CBS log please:

C:\Windows\Logs\CBS

This should give us an idea of where we currently stand. I think I know what caused SFCFix to return an 0x2 error and it's nothing of concern, we will come to that in a bit though.

Hello Sarah,

Thanks for the CBS log, there's definitely some improvement there. Can you run the System Update Readiness Tool again please, then upload the log as before:

C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

Hi Sarah,

Great, we've cleared out all of the issues in the CheckSUR log, now to finish off with the CBS log.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Hi Sarah,

Once again, sorry for the delay. Life is, vaguely, back on track now :)

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it

    https://dl.dropbox.com/u/16537616/SFCFix.zip

  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it
  6. SFCFix will now process the script
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFC.txt
  8. Copy (Ctrl + C) and Paste (Ctrl + V} the contents of this into your next post for me to analyse please - put

tags around the log to break up the text

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.
