Solved 86 program files in new 64 bit custom install.

I have just upgraded my HP Pavilion to a 64 bit system. when I open 'Program Files', together with 'Old Files' there is also '86 Program Files'. when I download a new application the default location choice is the 86 Program File. I know that this is causing conflicts as I have 2 Explores running and my wireless card keeps hiccuping. I have tried to delete the 86 program but without success. Anyone got any ideas?

64 bit windows 7 can run both 32 bit and 64 programs. 64 bit programs install into the Program Files folder and 32 bit programs install into the Program Files (x86) folder. I'm not sure what you mean by "Old files", did you mean the Windows.old folder? Also when you say delete did you mean un-install.

It doesn't sound like you are having a problem at all, unless you are giving the actual names of the folders. We can only go on what you type, so if your descriptions are vague and missing details, we can't do much.

You are supposed to have two Program Files directories, as mentioned above. That is normal, and you should let applications go to whichever one they default to. You DO NOT want to try and delete one of them. If you aren't sure why you have both, that tells me you aren't quite sure why you chose to upgrade to x64 in the first place.

As for your last statement, it is normal to have multiple instances of Explorer running. If your wireless card is having issues, it probably needs new drivers.

The reason you have two instances of Internet Explorer is that one is the 32-bit version and the other is the 64-bit version.

Whatever you do, don't try and uninstall the Programs folder or the Programs (x86) folder - both are needed to store your applications.

Check optional Windows Update for newer drivers. Don't change out drivers unless performance points to one as a problem.

Win7 is driver-complete with few exceptions, via the installer and optional Updates.

Thanks for that. Sorry about being vague, but there again It is almost inevitable when ones knowledge is limited. But the main thing is, your struggle with my shortcomings has borne fruit; you have answered my question. I now know that the X86 32 bit has a purpose and has not sneaked in around the back while I wasn't looking.
As to why I upgraded to 64 bit: The computer is capable of handling it and as it is now the most common of systems on offer with new machines, then why not? This will complement my brand new 27 dell Ultrasharp,video card and PSU; and when I save up some more pennies, a new Motherboard and Processor. As for my capricious wireless card? Well, I suppose I will just have to give it a good talking to.
