8800GTS equivalent in 9XXX series?

OK, so earlier today I was overclocking the crap out of my 8800GTS 320MB, just to see how far I could push it. Needless to say, that card is now dead.

So I headed down to my local big box retailer (ugh) with a couple of hundred bucks to grab a new card.

So there were 3 cards I was looking at...PNY 9800GT 1GB (600 core, 1500 shader) BFG 9800GT OC 1GB (625, 1566) and the PNY 9800 GTX OC 1GB (750, 1675) which was around $220.

I ended up getting the BFG 9800GT OC, brought it home, and it gave me absolutely no change in my WEI, and a bit of a change in Vantage.

Did I just buy the 9XXX equivalent of the card I just burned out?

I think they are about the same in performance but the chipset is probably better in the 9800GT and you possibly Overclock better with it to, although don't quote me on that.

I actually went from an 8600GT to 9600GT and there was a huge performance increase with those two cards and now I have a GTX260 and that craps all over my last ones.

Yeah, I really want a GTX260 or 280, but those things are way to expensive for me at the moment.

This is the last part of my new comp that I just built, so I was hoping to get something decent. I have noticed that it runs a lot cooler than the 8800 did, so it should OC better.

Man...that always happens. Like when I bought the C2Q Q6600, and found an i7 for the same price the next day.

Best to research what you buy on the net first and even better if you can buy on the net as it will always be cheaper, but you will also always have to wait which was out of the question for you as you needed it urgently, maybe you could take it back and just get a cheapy and then order the one from newegg.

Yeah, I was actually thinking about that, but I don't think they (Best Buy ) would take it back, since it has actually been installed already. Eh, well, next time hopefully it won't be such an urgent situation, and I can get a kickass card for relatively cheap.

the 8800GTS 320mb is a G80 & the 9800GT is a G92, the card you just bought has better architecture, runs cooler, uses less power, & has 112SPs as apposed to 96SPs.....

the 9800GT is a sound purchase over the 8800GTS....IMO, dont worry too much about the WEI, it will game far more efficiently.....

I don't know what would compare with a G80 8800GTS 320 but:
8800GTS 512 = 9800GTX (not the 9800GTX +)
9800GTX + = GTS 250 (65nm GTX +, 55nm GTS)

Yeah, I have noticed that I get much higher FPS across the board, and it does run a lot cooler (48 Idle 65 load) compared to the 8800 (65 idle 85 load). Also, because it does run so much cooler, it OCs a lot better.
