90s habit vs current trend

I have this habit of no desire to carry a phone when I go outside. I like freestyle, like I use to do it in the 90s. Somehow people nowadays, carry their phone everywhere. My friends use phones to contact me, how to retrospect this habit of contact friends?

I carry only a flip-phone, as do most of my friends. I used one in the '90's too or maybe nothing. It makes and receives phone calls, and I use it very little, but it's there for emergencies or a quick phone message. You need to get older friends.

Have been carrying a Mobile, [Cell], phone since they became available, started as a work tool, [back in the times when I had accounts with more than one provider as the coverage was better for different areas].

Moved to a smartphone as they became available and now use the phone as an essential as a part of my work and Personal life. I can make calls to say I'm running late, check emails on the road, I've always got a camera with me, [Ok I do carry a Pro DSLR in the car, that would be my weapon of choice], even when not going out planning to take photographs. I can also find manuals for old gear that customers lost, [put in a safe place], years ago. The help options are countless, some people even play games on them what a waste

I'm Sixty years old but have been an IT pro for many years so am used to be at the leading Bleeding Edge, so think of a Mobile Phone as part of my everyday carry

I carry a flipphone but I keep it turned off until I'm actually going to use it, which is rarely. I got it primarilly for emergencies. Since I use a pay as you go plan, I also disabled text messaging and voice mail so phone spammers wouldn't run up my phone bill (besides, if people want to talk to me, they can talk to me). I spent all my life not needing to be connected at the lip 24/7, especially when away from the house, and I see no need to start now, especially since I've been fully retired for about a decade.

I wouldn't mind the convenience of a smart phone but I've done just fine so far without one plus I don't need another monthly bill or worries about privacy.

If somebody wants me they can email and I can answer at my own leisure.

I don't know your age, but I have no interest in being trendy. I have enough of the internet at home. I just bought a GPS for my car, and I'm all set.

Or they can call me on my home phone.

Now there's another thing that a reasonable smartphone replaces and a smartphone is much safer, I wonder how many motorists have died whilst trying to read a paper map whilst driving

I've heard of many people getting into jams and even dying from using a smartphones GPS directions. I have a friend who has used Siri for directions when I visit her and some of those directions range from hilarious to ludicrous. Looking up the directions ahead of time is far more reliable.

I use Google Maps (the only thing of Google I ever use) to get directions and print out maps before leaving and have yet to have it fail me. Stopping somewhere and asking for directions usually works, too. I know, men won't ask for directions which explains why the Israelites wandered for forty years in the desert. If only Moses had asked for directions...

Nothing wrong with paper maps. I still have Hagstrom's map book for my metro area. I bought a GPS because I drive elderly people to make a few bucks, and I got hopelessly lost one night going home. I'm supposed to know the roads, like a taxi, and I can't stop to study maps. On long trips, I still get directions from Google Maps at home, and print it out.

Map-reading and having a sense of direction is one more skill the younger folks won't have, along with making conversation, reading body language and reading entire books.

Yeah, now they're watching the phone while driving. I might be an exception, pulling over somewhere to check ANYTHING. That comes with age. Another reason the OP needs older friends.

Methinks the point Nigel was making that one can have directions given vocally as one drives so taking one's eyes off the road won't be necessary. However, that works only if the directions are accurate which, in my own experience as well as from what I have read isn't always true.

And not if you're driving alone, which I usually am.

I also use ONLY Google Maps, oh, OK, I use Youtube too, but I have no username. Then I wash my comp with bleach.

Most smart phones have map apps that give spoken directions. That's what I believe Nigel was referring to. My limited experience with them is their accuracy was a joke much of the time.
