a comment intel pentium d processors.

hey all, just a comment about intel pentium d processors. i know that these are old and lots of bad are said about them but i have several desktops with them in and have never had any problems with them at all. all of them seem to idle in the 50s and under load with prime 95 from 60 to 70 degrees c. all of these are with stock hsf. i know these run hot,however they seem to be able to run at these temps without problems. i have ran the thottle watch and none of my appear to thottle down. never had any lock ups on any,no BSOD. they run vista and windowos 7 well and fsx well. yeah they ain't no i core but IMO they are a solid processor. i don't get why everyone says the bad. mine all came in desktops that others had thrown away so mine are free. perhaps that is why i have no complaints. i have intel and amd so no fanboy crap here. i think people forget that if it weren't for processors as these we would not have what we are able to buy today. just my opinion. poorgy

I don't know of anyone who complains about those processors, other than to say they've passed their prime. Now one is going to argue that they are high-end processors, but during their "peak", they were good little processors.

hey DeaconFrost, i do agree that they are past there prime. i agree that they were good processors and still are. i am not saying that they are a high end processor. i have read all sorts of things about them overheating and have not ran into any problems with that at all. i donate alot of desktops to people who can't afford one so i work with lots of old hardware etc and have just read alot about heat issues with them. i was just stating my opinion that their is still a place for old hardware that can run alot of todays software and do internet browsing. also like the input that others have to give thanks. poorguy

Got mine the same way, for free. Nothing is ever fast enough or good enough for gamers. Lots of hardware overheats when gaming. Their loss, our gain. As I type this, my "D" is running around 30, it never gets above 40.

Most old procesors are still good, as long as they are dual cores anyway.

And about overheating, yes they do have such issues, but just because a lot of the cases I see them in (including my older case) weren't designed with them in mind. For example it's very common to find them with PSUs a few cm over their fan, with PSU fan blowing hot air onto them.

Swapping the case with a slightly modern one (very slightly), that places the PSU in an entirely different position and adds a case fan is usually enough to "fix" the issue.

The one I'm using atm was one of them as well.

hey all, i agree and i have cut and installed a fan in the top of cases where possible and it does make a difference. i just like keeping the old stuff alive and find someone who will use it. poorguy

Most old procesors are still good, as long as they are dual cores anyway.

They aren't very old if they are dual core. Old is a Pentium 75 mhz

I still have a couple 8086s hanging around.

Of course, on the other hand, my newest build uses an i7-3930K. I can overclock it to 4.6GHz at 70C (max) air cooled (no stock fan available, thankfully), but no real need to. It's usually around 25C to 40C when my computer is on.
