But I really don't understand the need if you're simply recording to HDD.

Like I said, even if there's a delay - even if it was five minutes (exaggerating to make point) - whatever you're recording is still going to hard disk and it shouldn't be an issue - unless you're trying to use the laptop to record instruments/vocals and relying on the computer output itself to hear the sound.

I finally got it figured out

Yeah, going to the hard drive
If I was doing one thing to record. If I was only recording in then it is not a big deal
but imagine there's one track playing and you want to record a 2nd track along with that
what's being played already on the computer has no latency
but anything you do externally has a delay
you can't match the time and if what i hear is off then the way i react is off and it won't work



It doesn't matter because I finally figured this out..for me this was this case
When I had XP the only way I could enable input monitor was going into the registry and changes some values around until this ghostly input monitor option mute/unmute appeared on the (short) mixer options
I considered that before but seeing as how it's not XP, I tried to search for that with no luck and did not want to mess around in there too much.

Dell (yea, I know) would not update the driver
the audio was sigmatel which went out of business and was taken by IDT but newer IDT drivers would not install from intel either because it said I did not have that hardware or something like that
Some genius modified the IDT driver to install. Suddenly I have way more options
This still did not work at first
what happened before is when I go to recording and check "listen to device" it plays but This has the latency.
I thought "listen to device" was the same as enabling input monitor which I learned is not true
With this new driver I saw the input monitor with no adjustable levels (same as it was in XP) just on/off
It actually was on but i checked off and then on
when that happened I heard two sounds. same way as I had recorded
I unchecked the listen to this device option and now it plays through normally because the option to enable input monitor is showing again.
I think most computers allow this normally?
Years ago they told me
Dells ships Inspirons with the ability to monitor the input jack turned off. For models with the Sigmatel 92xx audio chip & driver an edit in the Registry of the subkey EnableInputMonitor will restore the monitoring function.
Why disable anything?

Apparently when I installed 7 this option was off as well from the crappy driver
I'm not sure why I could not locate it in the registry when I tried
"listen to the device" is not the same as enabling the input monitor
maybe everyone knows that or does not have to bother with that
the new driver must have brought that option up for me

oh yeah. Actually, this was never resolved completely

It turned out, I could hear things on the computer and things externally at the same time which was really good

but
it still recorded off so when I listened to it all, the recording was always off by that 0.13secs
i got fed up with it

I just used windows 7 for the internet, email etc.
it does look good
I do any kind of audio or video things with XP still

windows 7 was not my idea
