That's OK, but before I will answer your question you have to tell me about your PC/Internet habits. I mean - do you use p2p softwares, e-banking, games on-line or you just browsing (what kind of site do you visit: cracks, adult sites, community sites, news sites?) Do you want when software ask you often about almost everything what you do or you prefer silent security tools? What is you basic daily usage of PC?

Here are my suggestions:

Config #1
Layer No.1 (Prevention)
- Enable LUA/UAC and DEP for all applications.
- Online Armor Premium (firewall with classical HIPS) - easy to use, many notifications/prompts from HIPS module implemented in OA. // or Outpost Firewall Pro (also with classical HIPS)

Layer No.2. (Detection)
- Avira AntiVir Premium
- MBAM/SAS (as on-demand scaners)

Layer No.3. (Cure) - on-demand.
- Paragon Drive Backup or StorageCraft Shadow Protect Desktop or just use Windows 7 backup feature (image backup)
- Karen Replicator or SyncBack Freeware (data backup), both freeware but very reliable applications.

-------------------------------------

Config #2
Layer No.1 (Prevention)
- Enable LUA/UAC and DEP for all applications.
- DefenseWall Personal Firewall v3 (currently in Release Candidate state) - very powerful security application, it's policy based sandbox + HIPS, but it's not classical HIPS so it gives only critical prompts i.e. access to resources, keylogging, access to clipboard, etc...

Layer No.2. (Detection)
- Avira AntiVir Premium or Avira AntiVir Free (compare to Premium, version Free doesn't have http scaner, and updates are limited to one per day plus with every update you will see advertising Avira window, but it is stiil good alternative since detection in Free version is almost the same as in Premium version)
- MBAM/SAS (as on-demand scaners)

Layer No.3. (Cure) - on-demand.
- Paragon Drive Backup or StorageCraft Shadow Protect Desktop or just use Windows 7 backup feature (image backup)
- Karen Replicator or SyncBack Freeware (data backup), both freeware but very reliable applications.

you could try

AVG 9.0 it tells you if a link is safe or not. also use malwarebytes and SpybotS&D 6.2 and try and get windows defender. in addition to firewall and automatic updates.

WIndows defender is installed already in Windows 7. Also AVG isnt the best of the freeware anti virus programs as its marked critical files as infected in the past.

Windows Defender isn't installed or activated by defult on windows 7. If is were is the system tray Icon, All programs menu Icon or Desktop Icons? AVG is better than it used to be.

Sorry but it is activated by default on win7. MSE disables it when you install it. Defender is a resident program that doesnt require a tray icon.

Umm Micro$oft must have change things then. On Windows XP and Vista it was on the system tray and anywhere else. In windows 7 to run it go Computer then C:\Progamfiles\Windows Defender\MSASCui.

I can confirm that it is indeed there and activated. Microsoft Update will update it's definition files every once in a while. If your security is sufficient, there's really no harm disabling the service with services.msc.
